Read More	Vining Man Killed in Airplane Crash at Clutier’s Celebration Emil Dolash, 24, Is Victim of Tragic Accident at Annual Kolach Day One Tama county young man is dead and another is receiving treatment for severe injuries in the St. Francis hospital in Waterloo as the result of a tragic airplane crash which occurred Sunday at Clutier’s annual Kolach day celebration. Emil Dolash 24, of the Vining neighborhood, was fatally injured in the accident. He died in the Waterloo hospital at 6:10 a. m. Monday, about fourteen hours after he was taken unconscious from the wrecked plane. Emil Breja, 21 of the Elberon community, will recover, although he is reported to be suffering from a fractured hip and from severe lacerations on his arms, legs and body. Merle Crum, of Marshalltown was the pilot of the plane, which was owned by Dr. L. H. Launder, of Marshalltown, son of Dr. P. T. Launder, of Garwin. Crum suffered a fractured nose but no serious injuries. Crum had been at Clutier since 7 or 8 a. m. Sunday, taking up passengers at $1.50 for a five-minute ride or $2.50 for a longer trip. His ship was a three-passenger biplane, making his landings in a pasture on the Ed Krezek farm, about a half-mile northwest of Clutier. The crash occurred between 4:15 and 4:30 p. m. the plane falling in Joe L. Dvorak’s pasture a half-mile north of the landing field. In statements to reporters for Waterloo newspapers, Crum is quoted as saying that the accident was caused by one of his passengers sticking his foot through a hole in the floor of the forward cockpit, in which they were riding, causing his control stick to jam. The plane was equipped with dual controls, but the stick had been removed from the front cockpit. Some of those who examined the plane declare that it would have been possible for the pilot to have disconnected the forward set of controls entirely so that no such accident could have been possible, while others disagree. Dolash and Breja were taking their fourth straight ride in the plane when the accident occurred. At the close of third trip, witnesses say Dolash started to climb out of the plane, but Breja offered to pay his fare if he would remain for another trip and finally prevailed on him to remain. They were nearing the close of their fourth ride at the time of the crash. The pilot had turned the plane to head back south into the wind toward the landing field. He had been executing a number of sharp turns and dips throughout all four rides at the request of his passengers, it is said, and continued the same tactics as he neared the ground. One eyewitness told the Star-Clipper reporter that the plane completed a full loop just before it fell. Another declared the pilot apparently tried two or three times to make a full loop but never quite succeeded. Suddenly he appeared to lose control of the ship when it was about 400 feet from the earth. The last 100 feet it fell like a rock, witnesses declare. The engine stopped when the plane was about 50 feet from the earth, and it is believed the pilot shut off the switch to prevent a fire. The nose of the ship struck the ground first, and the body broke in two just behind the pilot’s seat. There was a terrific crash as the framework of the plane settled to earth. Spectators ran to the wrecked ship, but before any reached it the pilot was on the ground and was attempting to pull his passengers from the wreckage. Both Dolash and Breja were unconscious. A steel rod surrounding the cockpit was bent nearly double where it had been struck by Dolash’s chin. The two men were taken to the office of a Clutier physician. Both regained consciousness before town was reached. The Clutier doctor directed that they should be hurried to a hospital, and the plane pilot employed Henry Hartwig, proprietor of the Hartwig Auto company, to make the trip. Mr. Hartwig says both men were conscious all the way to Waterloo. Crum did not go to the hospital with the others but returned to view the wreckage of the plane. In the evening he had a companion drive him to Waterloo to visit Dolash and Breja. The owner of the plane was notified soon after the crash and drove immediately to Clutier from Marshalltown. After inspecting the wreckage. The remains of the plane were loaded onto trucks and hauled to Marshalltown, early the following morning. Sheriff E. O. Harris and County Attorney V. F. Kepford conducted a thorough investigation of the crash Monday and Tuesday and announced that no action against Crum would be taken. They believe the accident was more the fault of the passengers than of the pilot. Not all of the witnesses agree with this view. Some declare that Crum had been “stunting" at low altitudes all day in violation of flying regulations. One of the first persons to reach the pilot’s side after the crash says Crum told him that the accident was caused by some feature of the plane’s control mechanism becoming disconnected expressing the belief that it must have been loosened by the jar of taking off over rough ground. Although Crum is only 19 or 20 years old, he is said to have 230 hours of flying time to his credit. The funeral of Emil Dolash was held Wednesday morning at Chelsea and was conducted by Reverend Father W. Dostal. Burial was in the Stayskal cemetery in southeast Tama county. The crash victim was a son of John Dolash, near Tama, and Mrs. Tressy Dolash, who lives two and one-half miles west of Vining. He had been farming his mother's home place together with a brother, Albert Five other brothers and four sisters survive, all of whom are residents of Tama county. Two brothers, Ed and Joe preceded him in death. The living brothers are John, Frank, Will, Charles and James, and Mrs. Ben Votrobek, Mrs. John Papesh, Mrs. Louis Hlas and Mrs. Joseph Balvin.
