Sebesta,72, of Vining, died at 6:20 Saturday morning, June 29, 1963, at Veterans Hospital in Iowa City where he had been a patient for 12 days. Death was due to a heart ailment, specifically described as absence of heart rhythm. He had been in declining health for a number of years and in poor health since last March. He had undergone surgery at Iowa City in 1945 and 1955 and for a rupture in 1938 at a Marshalltown hospital. Emil Victor Sebesta, son of John and Frances Pokorney Sebesta, was born April 30, 1891, at Elberon, Iowa. He was reared in the Toledo farming area and received his schooling in rural schools of Otter Creek township. As a young man he farmed with his father on the homeplace 6 miles east of Toledo. Mr. Sebesta’s marriage to Julia Ledvina of near Vining took place November 15, 1921, at Holy Trinity Church with Father Hradecky officiating. Following their marriage, the couple lived with his parents for 15 years while he continued farming with his father in Otter Creek township. After the death of his father, and his mother went to live with a daughter, Mr. Sebesta and his wife stayed on the homeplace for the next four years. Mr. Sebesta then retired from farming in 1942 and moved to Vining where he bought a home. He was employed on the North Western railroad section at Elberon for about three years, then at the Iowa Wood Preserving Co. plant in Tama for two years until ill health forced him to quit. Later he worked for Funk Bros. Seed Corn Co. as a scooper in the field, unloading corn from wagons for sorting, and then he was employed in the Funk building in Belle Plaine. He also did odd jobs helping out farmers in the Vining area. For many years he cared for the St. Mary’s church building in Vining, starting fires in the church early Sunday morning, shoveling snow off the sidewalks, and ringing the church bells on Sunday, as well as other janitor work. During World War I, Mr. Sebesta served as a private in Company M, 2nd Infantry. He was inducted at age 27 on Sept. 5, 1918, at Toledo, and discharged March 5, 1919, at Camp Dodge, Des Moines. Mr. Sebesta was a member of St. MaryÂ’s Church in Vining and the Holy Name Society and the K. D. lodge. He is survived by his wife; a niece, Mrs. Milo (Gladys) Nekola of north of Toledo, whom he and his wife raised from age 5; his older brother Joe Sebesta of Cedar Rapids, and two sisters, Mrs. John (Mary) Dvorak of Cedar Rapids, and Mrs. Joe (Anna) Valenta of north of Vining. His niece, Mrs. Gladys Nekola, has two daughters, Suzanne and Geraldine. Mr. Sebesta was preceded in death by his father in 1934 and his mother in 1948. Funeral service for Mr. Sebesta was held Tuesday morning, July 2, 1963, at St. Mary’s church in Vining, with the Rev. Father Syrovy officiating. Mrs. William Riha was in charge of mass cards at the church, and Mr.s Edward Buresh and Mrs. Earl Wirstlin cared for Mass Cards at the Mason Funeral Home. Caring for the floral tributes were Mrs. Albert Buresh, Mrs. Allen Prusha and Miss Marcella Breja. Bearers were Wesley Dvorak, Bernard Valenta, Leonard Hala, Melvin Ledvina, Eugene Ledvina, and Milvoy Kaufman. Honorary pall bearers were Joe Breja Sr., William Riha, Milo Kalina, Frank Hayek Sr., John Cibula, and Leonard Herink. Interment was in Holy Trinity Cemetery.
