Emily Miller Meets Instant Death While on Her Way to Take A Train. Emily Miller, seventeen-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Miller of Roten Valley, eighteen miles southwest of Callaway, was instantly killed Monday morning of this week by the overturning of an auto in which she was seated along with her father brother. The accident happened near the top of Stop Table hill, eight miles from Callaway, and the car was being driven by Chester Miller, brother of the deceased girl. Miss Miller, who was a student at the Kearney Normal, has been in the habit of spending some of the week ends with her parents.. She came from Kearney last Friday night and remained at home over Saturday and Sunday with the intention of taking the return train at Callaway Monday forenoon. As Mr. Miller and his son, Chester, had business in Broken Bow that day, they decided to leave Emily at Callaway before proceeding to the county seat. The three started from home early in the morning with Chester at the wheel. The girl was on the front seat with her brother while Mr. Miller had the rear seat to himself. Sunday night's sleet had left the roads in slippery condition but no difficulty was experienced until the car reached the top of Stop Table hill at about eight o'clock. The machine was making about ten miles an hour at the time which was not considered an excessive rate of speed. When the descent began something happened to the brakes and they refused to hold as they should. The driver edged toward one of the banks in order to relieve the situation, but the rear of the car slipped around with lightning rapidity and in an instant, the machine overturned. All three of the occupants were caught beneath the car. The father was under the back seat while Chester was held down by the wheel. Emily was thrown over her brother, and the edge of the car dropped on her head, crushing it and killing her instantly. For a long while Chester worked under the machine trying to extricate himself. He finally succeeded in digging a small aperture thought which he crawled. His father had become entangled with the robes under the rear seat and was released with difficulty. Neither of them were seriously injured. Emily's body was removed from beneath the wrecked machine and one of the survivors went to the nearest house, that of Henry Ridder, and telephoned to Callaway for Dr. Bryson. But when the physician arrived he pronounced the girl dead and said that her death had probably been instantaneous. Mr. Ridder offered the services of himself and car and took the body of the unfortunate girl back to the Miller home, where it was prepared for burial by M. E. Schneringer, of Callaway. Funeral services were held at the Miller home Wednesday afternoon of this week. Interment being made in the Stop Table cemetery. Deceased is survived by her parents and one brother.
