Description	:	Emma Alice Sigmund was born in Thurmont, Frederick County, Maryland, on May 31, 1852, daughter of Johann Gottlieb and Mary Elizabeth Firor Sigmund. On January 10, 1878, she married William Landers Martin, son of Jacob and Matilda Yonson Martin. Five children were born to them, the eldest, Matilda Elizabeth, having died at the age of 17 years. The other four were Victor Sigmund, Scott Weaver, Mary Linnie and Olive Ruth Martin. Emma was my great-grandmother. Obituary of Emma Alice Sigmund Martin from the Frederick Daily News, December 5, 1940: "Mrs. Emma S. Martin. Mrs. Emma Sigmund Martin, widow of Rev. W. L. Martin, died Wednesday at noon at her home in Thurmont, aged 88 years, 6 months and 3 days. She had been ill several weeks. Death was due to infirmities of age. A daughter of the late Godliep and Elizabeth Firor Sigmund, the deceased was a resident of the community all her life. She was an active member of the United Brethren Church, having attended Sunday School and church since childhood. She was for years the president of the Mite Society and taught her Sunday School Class until her recent illness. She had been very active until then. She is survived by the following children: Victor Sigmund Martin, Glendale, Calif.; Scott W. Martin, Chicago; Mrs. Maynard Freeze, Thurmont, and Mrs. W. O. Harris, Hyattsville; thirteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The body was at the funeral home in Thurmont, from where it was removed to the late home this afternoon at 3 o'clock. Brief funeral services at the last home Saturday afternnon at 2:30 o'clock, with further services in the United Brethren Church at 3 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Ivan Naugle, assisted by former pastors. Interment in the U. B. Cemetery. M. L. Creager and Son, funeral directors." Another obituary of December 6, 1940: "Mrs. Emma Sigmund Martin, one of Thurmont's well known residents, widow of Rev. W. L. Martin, died at her home on West Main Street Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock. Death was due to infirmities of age. She was aged 89 years, 6 months and 3 days. Mrs. Martin was a daughter of Godliep Sigmund and Mary Elizabeth Firor Sigmund and is the last member of her family. Her father was born in Austria. Mrs. Martin was born in Thurmont. She was a member of the United Brethren Church, Thurmont, and attended Sunday School from childhood and was one of the most faithful church workers. She was president of the Mite Society and taught a Sunday School class until her recent illness. Surviving are the following children: Victor Sigmund Martin, of Glendale, Calif.; Scott W., Chicago, Ill.; Mrs. Maynard Freeze, Thurmont, and Mrs. W. O. Harris, Hyattsville. Thirteen grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon, with brief services from her late home at 2:30 o'clock, with further services in the United Brethren Church at 3 o'clock, in charge of her pastor, Rev. She attended Sunday School and church from childhood and was a most faithful church worker, being president of Mite Society of U. B. Church and a Sunday School teacher until shortly before her death. Surviving were Victor Sigmund Martin, Glendale, Calif.; Scott W., Chicago, Ill.; Mrs. Maynard Freeze, Thurmont; and Mrs. W. O. Harris, Hyattsville, Md." Funeral notice for Emma Alice Sigmund Martin from the Catoctin Enterprise, December 13, 1940: "Mrs. Emma S. Martin. Funeral services for Mrs. Emma S. Martin, widow of Rev. W. L. Martin, who died at her home on West Main Street, Dec. 4, were held Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock in the United Brethren Church, conducted by her pastor, Rev. Ivan G. Naugle, and assisted by former pastors, Rev. G. I. Rider, Hagerstown, and Rev. John Green, York, Pa. Mrs. Emory Stottlemyer and Miss Alice Carlson sang "Saved By Grace" and Miss Carlson sang "The Home Over There," accompanied by Miss Cassandra Hesson. Pallbearers were Emory Stottlemyer, Roy Frushour, Harry Hetterly, William J. Mackley, William Ridenour, Edgar Fogle, and C. E. Cassell. Interment was made in the U. B. Cemetery, M. L. Creager and Son, funeral directors."
