When Emma was 17, the family moved to a... Read More	ENGLE, EMMA AMELIA—Emma Amelia Engle was born to Joseph Svehla and Anna Marie Riha Svehla on November 6, 1899, at Plattsmouth. She passed away on August 8, 1991, at Bryan Memorial Hospital in Lincoln, at the age of 91 years, 9 months and 2 days. She was one of ten children in the family. Emma was baptized into the Catholic faith on November 12, 1899. She lived with her family at Plattsmouth until the age of nine, when the family moved to a farm near Milligan. When Emma was 17, the family moved to a farm near Exeter where she worked out of the home caring for and loving children and the elderly. Emma attended school in Plattsmouth and District 6 near Milligan through the sixth grade. Emma was a homemaker, mother and gardener. The love she gave to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren will never be forgotten. Her generous love and concern carried into her circle of many relatives and friends. She always found time to listen and share her love with everyone. Emma’s kitchen was open at all times and she delighted in serving her home-baked kolaces, rolls and goodies to all who called on her. Another love of Emma’s was gardening. Toiling in her vegetable and flower garden provided many hours of joy, inner peace and pride. She did some canning and baking up until the time she entered the hospital on Tuesday, August 5, of this year. Emma was married to Constantine Alexander Engle of Friend on April 2, 1921, and to them eight children were born. Emma was a faithful member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ for 52 years. She was most active in the Women’s Fellowship and most willing to lend a helping hand when needed. The past several years as her health began to fail, she was unable to attend church regularly, but she continued to read her Bible at home daily. The church and her family were her greatest concern and activity of her life. She also had a very keen sense for recalling dates and happenings, and as late as this past Memorial Day weekend, nieces and nephews were gathering family dates from her at a family reunion in Friend. Emma was preceded in death by her parents and by husband, C.A .A., five brothers, John, Stanley, Joseph, Frank and John B.; three sisters, Mary Tenopir, Anna Soukup and Josephine Engle, and by grandson, Larry Engle and great-grandson, Gregory Neville. She is survived by her children: sons, George A. and wife, Phyllis, Frank, Harold G. and wife, Helen, Willis L and wife, Beth; daughters, Eleanor R. and husband, Arlan Becker, Ruth D. and husband Delbert Gorge, Anna M. and husband, Joe Vnoucek, Mary L. and husband, Ron Uldrich; sister, Alice Martson; 19 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Funeral services were conducted from the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Geneva on Monday, August 12, with Rev. Brenda Barnes-Jamieson officiating. Mike Zeleny accompanied Robert Kassik who sang “Everyone Carries His Own Cross” in Czech. The congregational hymns were “Nearer My God to Thee” and “How Great Thou Art.” Those serving as pallbearers were Alex, David and Ronald Uldrich, Tim, George Jr., Robert and Jerry Engle and Danny Sorge. Honorary pallbearer was Chris Engle. Interment was in the Geneva Public Cemetery. The Nebraska Signal August 15th, 1991 page 7
