LAIRD BURIED TUESDAY Died At The Home Of A Niece In Baltimore Saturday Was Ardent Advocate Of Temperance Cause Mrs. Emma D. Laird, one of the community's most highly respected residents, passed away at the home of her niece, Mrs. Charles McGeehan, in Baltimore, last Saturday afternoon, July 18th. She had been in failing health for several years. In May, she and her sister returned to her home here for a time, when a number of her friends greeted her again. They returned to Baltimore recently, and Mrs. Laird was able to be up until the day before her passing. She was the daughter of the late Noah M. Lawson and Nancy Ward Lawson, and grew up in the Jacksonville neighborhood and attended school at the Jacksonville Academy. At the age of twenty one, she was married to W. Frank Laird. A new home was built near the home of her parents by the young couple, and occupied by them for many years. As long as she was able she was very faithful in church attendance. At the age of 17 she was admitted on probation at St. Peter's Methodist Church, but later in life transferred her membership to Immanuel Methodist Church. Mrs. Laird was an ardent advocate of temperance and loved the temperance cause. For more than 26 years she was a loyal member of the Crisfield Womans Christian Temperance Union. Besides attending the State convention, she had the privilege of attending two of the national W.C.T.U. conventions, one of them in Washington in 1917, and the other in Minneapolis in 1927. Her husband and two children preceded her in death some years ago, but she still carried on until poor health put an end to her endeavors. Her body rested in the the Bradshaw Funeral Parlors here until 10:00 a.m. Tuesday morning, when it was taken to Immanuel Methodist Church, where funeral services were held at 11:00 o'clock with the pastor, Rev. Melvin E. Wheatley, officiating. Interment was in the Crisfield cemetery. The pall-bearers were William H. Bradshaw, Warren F. Sterling, Frank Ward, W. Frank Daugherty, John W. Dize and Frank P. Landon. Mrs. Laird is survived by one sister, Mrs. Anna Todd, of Baltimore, and several nephews and nieces. The Crisfield Times, Crisfield, Maryland, Friday, July 24, 1942, p. 1
