Surviving is her son Tom (Betty) Streets, Scotch Grove, 4 Granddaughters, Julie (Rick) Thompson, Shellsburg, Jayne (Scott) DeWitte, Lisbon, Amy Streets Littleton, Matthews, North Carolina, Janelle (John) Stadtmueller, Monticello, 7 great-Grandchildren, Nick and Alex Thompson, Hannah DeWitte, Logan Littleton, Kal, Katherine and Kurt Stadtmueller and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Louie, her Parents, and 8 siblings, Lula, George, Alta (Ide), Georgiana (Min), William (Bud), Ferdinand (Ted), Heinrich (Hank) and Sala (Sade). Emma Elfreda Oltman was born June 24, 1917 at Scotch Grove, Iowa. She was the daughter of George and Gesine Rickels, Oltman. Frede received her early education in the Rocky Ridge School and later attended the Monticello Community Schools. Frede married Louie Hanken on February 14, 1935 at St. Johns Lutheran Church. The couple farmed for a year in Clay Township. They farmed for over 50 years in Scotch Grove Township. Frede had an egg route for many years and was the bookkeeper for Louie's auction business. Louie preceded her in death on June 15, 1987. Frede continued to make her home on the farm until 2006 when she moved to the care center. Frede was a life long member of St. Johns Lutheran Church. She was baptized on August 5, 1917 and Confirmed her faith on April 9, 1933. She was a member of the Ladies Aid as well. Frede also belonged to the Oak Drive Club, and served on the Senior Housing Board and many other volunteer services and committees. She was a devoted Mother and Grandmother and will be deeply missed. The family would like to thank Hospice of Mercy and the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for there excellent care during Frede's illness.
