Louie Hanken, Scotch Grove, died June 15 at the John McDonald Hospital in Monticello, following a brief illness. Louie L. Hanken was born Sept. 24, 1911, in Delaware County, near Sand Springs, the son of John H. and Eliza Stadtmueller Hanken. He received his early education in the rural schools of Delaware and Jones counties. Louie chose farming as his life's work. Then on Feb. 14,1935, Louie J married Elfreda Oltman at St. John's Lutheran Church in Monticello. The couple farmed for a year in Clay Township. They then moved to Scotch Grove Township, where they have farmed for over 50 years. In 1944, Louie attended and graduated from Reisch Auctioneering School. He conducted over 4,500 sales during his career. Louie was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church. He was baptized Oct. 15, 1911, and confirmed on May 23, 1926. He served in many offices of the church, and was chairman for six years and secretary for 13 years. He had been serving on the board of parish fellowship. Louie was also a professional boxer for 16 years. He had 160 professional matches. In 1931, he had 21 knockouts in a row. He fought for the last time on May 12,1979, at the age of 67 in an old timers boxing match. As a member of the Jones County Board of Supervisors, Louie served from 1963 until 1977. He was chairman of the Iowa Supervisors Association for three years. He also served on the Scotch Grove School Board for six years, the Jones County Farm Bureau for two years as chairman and for six years as a voting delegate. He also served as chairman of the Farmers Mutual Creamery Board for 21 years. He also served on the Jones County Care Facility care review board and the eminent domain board. He had also been serving on the HAVE Inc. board, a position he had held since its founding. Louie was also an honorary member of the FFA and 4-H. He is survived by his wife; a son, Tom Streets of Scotch Grove; four granddaughters; a brother, Richard Hanken of Monticello; and a sister, Wilma Miller of Monticello; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents a sister and five brothers. Casketbearers were George H. Bohlken, Arthur Husmann, Jim Wright, Don Eilers, Stuart Leggett, Harold Eby, Paul Paulsen and Irvin Husmann. Honorary bearers were James Moran, Grover Benischek, Everett Mayberry, Frank Eilers Jr., Miles Tredway, Steve Strang, Leo Cook, Merlin Moore, John Christophersen, Bill Porter and Earl Beisell. Goettsch Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
