SALISBURY, EMMA JANE—Emma Jane Salisbury, daughter of Edwin L. and Bertha O. Cumberland, was born in Illinois, May 14, 1876. She moved to Nebraska at an early age and lived on a farm southwest of Geneva until the death of her father. She then moved to Geneva with her mother and brother, Lyle. After graduating from Geneva high school in 1895, she entered the teaching profession. She was a teacher in the Geneva schools for 26 1/2 years. In December, 1922, she was married to William B. Salisbury, and moved to North Platte. Several years after the death of her husband, she returned to Geneva to make her home with her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Cumberland. After their deaths she moved to Sunset Home where she had resided the past few years. She leaves two step-daughters, Marie Joder of North Platte, Neb., and Ida Mae Casey of San Francisco, Cal.; a nephew, E. Eugene Cumberland of Auburn, Neb.; a niece, Laverne Nixon of York, Neb., and several great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and one nephew. Mrs. Salisbury was an efficient and popular teacher and the hundreds of Geneva children she taught had a high regard for her. She was quite active until her final illness and enjoyed visiting with relatives and old friends. She attended the high school alumni banquet last May, and enjoyed it. She was also active in Methodist church activities in her younger years. Funeral services were conducted from the Kritner-Farmer funeral home at 2:30 p. m. Saturday, February 14. Rev. John Stayton officiated. Mrs. H. A. Rosenau sang “In the Garden” and “The Lord’s Prayer.” Mrs. Willard Foster was accompanist. Pallbearers were Edwin and William Cumberland, Roger Bruning, Jerald Nixon, Thomas Ousey and Kimball Wells. Interment was in the Geneva cemetery. The Nebraska Signal February 19th 1970 page 5.
