She had given birth to a baby four days before her death. When she went to the hospital, she was afflicted with a severe cold, which later developed into double pneumonia. Mrs. Wilken was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Carl Probel, and was born near Ryan, November 7, 1889. She was baptized December 1, 1989, in the Lutheran church, and confirmed in the same church at Ryan, April 5, 1903, by Rev. E. Melchert. She was married to John Wilken, April 19, 1906, at Ryan, by Rev. Melchert. The deceased is survived by her husband and five children, viz: Loretta, Lorenz, Irvin, Mayede, and the baby, who is a week old. Mrs. Wilken is also survived by one brother, Carl Probel of Ryan and by two sisters, Mrs. John Berger of Cedar Rapids and Mrs. Henry Scheer of Ryan. She is also survived by her grandfather who lives at Manchester. The funeral services were held at the family home today at 12 o'clock. A short prayer was had at the home, and thereafter other services were held at the Zion's Lutheran church in Wayne Township at 1 o'clock. The Rev. J. Willms, the pastor of that church, who took for the text of the funeral sermon, Isiah 55 vs. 8-9. There is unusual sadness in the demise of Mrs. Wilken, which is felt by a large circle of her friends on account of sympathy for her husband and also for the small children, the oldest of which is 13 years of age. Blind indeed is the person who cannot be touched by the pathos of human death, when they stand in the presence of such a loss to a devoted husband and a family of little children. The weakness of human power and the uncertainty of life is profoundly impressive at such a time. Such a sad incident would be almost unbearable to those close of kin were it not for the hope in the Father above, which comes as a strengthening hand in the hour of darkness.
