Description	:	Emma Lucille Swick was born on June 29, 1901 to Gustave and Hannah Hoppe in rural Wheeler county, Nebraska, the first baby born in the settlement. She died on Sept 8, 1988 at the Gordon hospital. Emma went by buggy and horseback to school and her parents boarded the teacher. The schoolhouse was moved several times to be near most of the pupils. Read More	Emma Lucille Swick was born on June 29, 1901 to Gustave and Hannah Hoppe in rural Wheeler county, Nebraska, the first baby born in the settlement. She died on Sept 8, 1988 at the Gordon hospital. Emma went by buggy and horseback to school and her parents boarded the teacher. The schoolhouse was moved several times to be near most of the pupils. She lived in a dormitory while attending Chambers and Bartlett high schools. After graduating, she taught at Bartlett, near Sidney and finally at Clinton. She attended summer school at Kearney and Chadron colleges for four summers. Emma was married to Raleigh Swick on April 18, 1928. They lived on farms on the Pine Ridge Indian reservation north of Gordon for 59 years. She was a member of the Gordon Methodist church and the order of Eastern Star. She was active in gardening, extension and social clubs. Emma's strong attribute was her concern for others. Emma was preceded in death by her parents and by her brother, Forrest Hoppe. Services were held Sept. 12 in Gordon with the Rev. Morris Coggin officiating. Burial was in the Gordon cemetery. Pallbearers were Francis Elwood, Wesley Elwood, Paul Metzger, Archie Nelson, Winston "Bub" Nelson and Marvin Roth.
