Mrs. Emma May Sharp, 65, a direct descendant of two pioneer Northwest families and herself one of the oldest and best-known pioneer descendants of the Kittitas valley succumbed to a cerebral hemorrhage at her home here late Saturday night. Not as a pioneer however, was "Miss Sharp" best known to dozens of her friends and acquaintances. She was 'Mother' to many of them, young men who made her home their own during past years when they came here to serve apprenticeships on the Ellensburg Evening Record or to start in other occupations. Born near The Dalles, Ore., in 1870, Miss Sharp accompanied her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John P. Sharp to the Kittitas valley in 1873, when this was still Yakima County, Washington territory and had since made her home here. Her father, a true pioneer drove an ox team across the great plains in 1852 to Oregon, where he married Nancy J. Rowland. The Rowland family was one of the earliest to settle in Western Oregon and the Willamette valley. Mrs. Austin Mires of Ellensburg is among its descendants, also Mrs. Sharp died here in 1908. Mr. Sharp, who engaged in the farming and stock business, and later pioneered the dairy business here, was a member of the board of county commissioners when the Kittitas was made a separate county. He became a member of the state legislature and was a member of the board of regents of the Washington Agriculture college at the time of his death in 1905. Among the men whom Miss Sharp mothered at her home at 700 E. Seventh street are many who served apprenticeships on the Evening Record and later became famous reporters, editors, authors and publishers. Two of the best known are Smith Reavis, now foreign editor of the Associated Press in New York City and Phil O'Neil, now copy editor of the Seattle Times. Shortly before her death, Miss Sharp recalled that her correspondence largely with men who had once resided at her home, included 24 states and 12 foreign countries. Surviving members of her immediate family include Mrs. Cornelia A. Pease, Ellensburg, and Mrs. Eleanor V. Mack, Seattle, sisters, L. L. Sharp and J. J. Sharp, Ellensburg, brothers, and 14 nieces and nephews from the families of Henry E. Sharp and Nora B. Cleman, deceased brother and sister. Funeral services are to be held at the Honeycutt Chapel tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock with the Rev. Jack Ledge conducting the services. The Ellensburg Record, Ellensburg, July 29, 1935
