He received his discharge at March Field near Riverside, CA, after serving three years in the U.S. Army. Before coming to March Field Riverside, he was stationed at Moody Field, GA. Chico Enterprise Record, no date, ca 1985, by John Gallant, Staff Writer: "Durham faces a water crisis....Emmett Coon's retiring. Durham.----There have been droughts, broken pipes and burned out pumps, but nothing in the Durham Irrigation District's 37-year history can match the crisis triggered by Emmett Coon's impending retirement. Coon, 67, is the irrigation district. He has been the district's only secretary-manager since it was created in 1948. He runs the tiny district office, manages the bills and, until his back began giving out, repaired the pipes and pumps that kept drinking water flowing into 280 homes and businesses.-----Perhaps most important, he has pleaded, prodded and cajoled residents into serving on the board of directors. When there was a vacancy one year, Coon appointed himself director until he was told he couldn't hold both jobs.-----And he has done it all for only $200 a month. Coon had some help. His wife Marge was the district's office clerk until her retirement last year and she still serves as the board's recording secretary. "it's kind of a mom and pop deal. But don't put that in the paper," said Coon. But as district board president Martin Zinniel told a gathering of residents Thursday night, "Emmett has grown weary of more or less carrying the load of the district all these years." Coon said he'd like to go deer hunting, "but something always seems to come up."-----The district hasn't been able to interest anyone in doing Coon's job for $200 a month. It also can't interest anyone in serving on its three-man board of directors. Graveside services will take place for Emmett Arthur Coon, 86, of Durham on Tuesday, May 18, 2004, at 11 A.M. at Glen Oaks Cemetery. He passed away Thursday, May 13, 2004, in Chico. Emmett was born November 21, 1917, in Durham, CA to William and May Coon. He attended Durham Elementary and High School. He married Marjorie Brown on September 14, 1940. She preceded him in death in 1993. Emmett served in the Army Air Corp during World War II. He was employed by the Durham Unified School District and worked as a bus mechanic and driver for many years. When Oroville Dam was being built he worked for the California State Department of Parks and Beaches/Water Resources as a mechanic until he retired in 1976. Emmett also served as Secretary/ Manager of the Durham Irrigation District for many years. He was a member of the Durham Volunteer Fire Department, Durham Rotary Club, Table Mountain Masonic Lodge in Paradise for over 50 years. Chico Elks Lodge, Durham American Legion, PERS, Durham Good Sams, and SIRS. "He is survived by two children Judy Wagoner of Marina del Rey and Richard Coon of Sacramento; two grandchildren, Tim Wagoner of Durham and Scott Wagoner of Chico..."
