Handwritten letter (pencil) dated May 2, 1907 - Durham: Mrs. Richardson Dear Sister I am through hauling hay and have for you $201.56. Two Hundred one & 56/100. Come done [down] as soon as you can & get it. You folks can bring your cattle down as soon as you want to. Now do not bring less than 50 head as there is plenty of feed. Your Brother Emmett Coon - Note: Hay 31010 lbs. News clipping dated July 7, 1934: "Durham--Emmett Coon, Sr., and O.G. Richardson left yesterday morning for a trip to Antelope, Nev. They will traverse part of the country covered by Coon in 1860 when he came to California with an immigrant train. At Antelope they will visit the grave of Coon's aunt who died while crossing the plains and was buried there. One of the men in the train chiseled her name and the date of her death in a large rock by the grave and the inscription is still readable." Corning Observer, 12 June 1939: "Brother of Mrs. Duffield Passes Away In Durham. Mrs. F.F. Duffield was in Chico today to attend the funeral of her "baby" brother, Emmett Coon, aged 79 years, who passed away Saturday at his home in Durham from a long illness. Mr. Coon had been a resident of Durham since 1860 when the family made the long trek from their Illinois home by wagon train. During the long arduous journey across the plains it was the duty of two little girls, Frances, aged 10, and her sister, Janie, six, to care for the nine-months-old baby brother.-----"Mr. Coon was married and reared a family of five sons, all of whom survive and live on ranches near his home in Durham, and are: Jesse G., L.H., W.E., Allen T. and Homer. Also five grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and his only sister, Mrs. Frances F. Duffield of Corning survive.- "Funeral services were conducted this morning at ten o'clock at the Bicknell (Nugent) Funeral Home with Rev. Harris Pillsbury of the Presbyterian church officiating, and internment was made in Chico cemetery beside his wife who passed away 25 years ago. Others attending the funeral from Corning besides Mrs. Duffield were his nieces, Mrs. A.L. Jobe, and Mrs. Mary Holden and Mrs. F.B. Duff." ~~~ Chico Enterprise Record, June 10, 1939: "Widely Known Durham Rancher Ends His Life. Ill for several months and despondent, Emmett Coon, 79, widely known Durham rancher, ended his life by shooting himself through the chest with a shotgun some time this morning before 11 o'clock. Coon had been living with his son Jesse Coon, about 300 yards from the old ranch home, and in the absence of his son went to the old homestead and committed suicide. The body was found by a granddaughter, Adele Coon, daughter of Jesse Coon.-----"Deceased was born in Coles county, Ill., and came to California across the plains when nine months old. His father, William Coon, settled west of Durham. Coon is survived by five sons, Jesse G. Coon, L. H. Coon, W. E. Coon, Allen T. Coon and Homer Coon, all of Durham. Five grandchildren and many nieces and nephews also survive." In a follow up article Chico Enterprise Record, June 12, 1939, pallbearers were R.A. Semrau, R.R. McEnespy, William Holland, L.E. Ford, W.B. Wageman, and W.H. McAnarlin. Interment was in the family plot of Chico Cemetery."
