A feeling of sorrow swept over La Porte City yesterday afternoon when it was learned that E.M. Haven had died. Mr. Haven had been in failing health for some time but had continued to do light work about his home, keeping his lawn and garden, and tending his flowers. Yesterday he felt ill while mowing the lawn, and went into the house to lie down. A physician was called and the family thought he would undoubtedly recover. About three o'clock he fell asleep and passed peacefully away. Emmet Merville Haven was born March 10th, 1854, at Harlan, Illinois, and came to Iowa with his parents when he was a small child. He spent his boyhood days at Rockford, Iowa. In 1880 he went to Bristow and engaged in the mercantile business, remaining there ten years. On November 30th, 1881, he was married to Miss Sarah E. Hull at Olin, Iowa, and they established their home in Bristow. In 1900 Mr. and Mrs. Haven moved to La Porte City and he opened a department store, to which he gave his undivided attention for 28 years. Owing to failing health in October 1928, Mr. Haven sold the grocery department and one other department to his two sons, M.L. and Glenn L. Haven. He continued to operate the dry goods department for the following two years and then close dout his stock. Since that time Mr. Haven had spent his time in his yard and garden and apparently had much better health than when he was in the store. Mr. Haven was one of the finest men in this community. He was strictly honest and upright in his business dealings and had the confidence and respect of every person who knew him. As a citizen of La Porte City he was always loyal to his home town and willing to do anything which might be a help to the community. It is fitting that the highest tribute be paid to his memory. Surviving, along with the widow, are six children: Merville L., Glenn L., Percy and Miss Opal, all of La Porte City; Carleton of Washington, Iowa; Mrs. Frank Gutknecht of Hudson, Iowa; seven grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Ella Fulghum of Mason City. One grandson, Jack Haven, preceded him in death in July 1933. Funeral services will be held on Friday afternoon in the Haven home at two o'clock. Rev. R. W. Ludy, pastor of the Presbyterian church, will conduct the service and will be assisted by Rev. C. D. James, pastor of the M.E. Church.
