"ENOCH STRAW, father of W.J. Straw, died Friday morning, Sept. 30, 1887, at the advanced age of 89 years. His death was mainly the result of old age. He was a native of Maine and had been a resident of this county nineteen years. His wife to whom he was married 66 years ago, survives him, though in feeble health. The funeral exercises took place Sunday."
Ran Friday, Aug 26, 1887, Page 3, Story County Watchman, Nevada, Story Co. Iowa " Friday last Enoch Straw celebrated his 89 birth day by coming into town and visiting his son who lives here. His wife is 81 years of age and also came to town. The couple have been married 60 years and both are hearty and halo for the advance age to which they have reached. The desire of all is that they may live to enjoy many more returns of their natural days."
The son living in town would of been Isaac Newton Straw and his family.
Also Ran Friday Oct 23, 1885, Page 3. Story County Watchman " W J Straw living 3 miles north of Nevada, will have a sale of graded shorthorns, horses, hogs, hay and other articles, Wednesday November 4h."
Enoch Straw married Betsy Welch at Paronsfield, York County, Maine on March 14, 1822. She was the daughter of Andrew and Elizabeth Welch. Betsy is the descendant of Philip Welch one of the thousand Irish young boys and young women taken from their beds at night from Ireland and Scotland and loaded on ships and taken to America as slaves to be sold.
Philip Welch age 11 and William Downing age 14 were kidnapped in 1654 by Ship Master George Dell of Boston. Taken aboard Dell's ship the GOODFELLOW bursting at the seams with others kidnapped to be taken to Boston to be sold. Philip and William were sold on May 10, 1654 to Judge Samuel Symonds of Ipswich, Massachusetts. After 7 years Philip and William told Samuel they were not going to work for him any more because they were taken from the beds at night as kids and had never agreed to anything. Samuel had them arrested and hauled into court where they and other young Irish men testified of being stolen and sold against their will. Court records refer to them as slaves because they never agreed to being taken or sold to Samuel. They appeared before a panel 4 Judges in which Samuel was one of them. They pass judgement on the boys that Samuel had a bill of sale for them and he owed them and instead of only serving for 7 years as most in servitude did, they ordered , they had to serve until May 10, 1663 because of their action before Samuel would set them free. The hearing set the definition for ownership in Massachusetts Law. Philip Welch married Hannah Haggard of Ipswich and had at least 8 children. Philip Welch Jr. settled in York County, Maine.
Enoch and Betsy left York Co. Maine and settled in Dodge Co. Wisconsin in 1845 per the history of Hustisford, Dodge Co. Wisconsin. On 9-1-1848 Betsy Straw of Dodge Co. Wisconsin purchased 40 acres in SE 1/4 of SW 1/4 of Section 26 in twsp 10 N, Range 16 E in Dist of lands to sale at Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Also purchased 40 acres SW 1/4 of SE 1/4, Sect 25, twsp 10 N Range 16 E on the same day. Freeman and Ira Bickford also purchased land in 1848 in Dodge Co as well.. Son Andrew Welch Straw purchased 80 acres on 6-1-1858 in Sauk Co. Wisconsin. Where he lived a number of years. Betsy sold the land at Hustisford, Dodge Co. Wisconsin and the family moved to Richland, Story County, Iowa in 1868.
On Jan 24, 1863 Newton Cleveland brought suit against Enoch Straw and Betsy Straw his wife, Charles L. Straw and ___ Straw and his wife, Jacob Remmel and Mary Remmel his wife, in the Circuit Court of Dodge County, Officially filed Jan 31, 1863 . Notice ran in the Whig of Seventy-Six, Beaver Dam, Dodge Co. Wisconsin. Had 90 days to respond to the charges, Notice ran again March 24, 1863. Newspaper does not state the charges. It is lucky that these notices survived. Newspaper office burned twice. The court house also burned, that is why there is not a lot of records surviving in Dodge County per The Wisconsin State Historical Society.. I believe this might have been about Betsy selling some of their land, but have no proof and no records can be gotten. I researched for any connection for the Remmels to Enoch. There was no connection family wise. Jacob Remmel and wife Mary Demmerath came to Wisconsin from Germany. They have FAG memorials, Jacob's is 34952880.
Betsy again purchased land in Richland, Story County, Iowa. SW 3/4 of NW 1/2 Sect 33. twsp 84 range 22. William Jackson Straw purchased a lot of property in Nevada and Richland, Story Co. Iowa per newspaper land notices.
It is so very odd that Great great grandmother Betsy was the owner of all the land. Maybe it was money from her father Andrew as his will suggested. We may never know. But all the land was purchased by her and I tend to believe the money came from her father, or his will would listed what all his children was to receive upon his death otherwise. . His will stated he had already given everything he intended to give his children before his death. Son Cyrus got the homestead in 1838.
Enoch and Betsy had the following children; The first two sons were named after their grandfathers, Enoch Straw, Sr and Andrew Welch. Daughter Elizabeth would have been named after both her grandmothers, Elizabeth Blaisdell and Elizabeth Welch. Which were the naming practices at that time. Their Children as follows; # 1. Enoch Jr. 1822, York Co. Maine. Died young. This is proven by the naming of a second son named Enoch. Common practice of the time. # 2. Andrew Welch born 1-7-1823 Banger, Penobscot Co.. Maine per his death record. . Died 4-18-1906 Vernon Co. Wisconsin. Married 1854 to Sarah J. (Atkins) FAG # 39616511. She had a sister named Harriet Atkins age 80 born 1825 in the 1905 Wisconsin State census living with Andrew and Sarah. In the 1870 Census Sarah had her mother M. Atkins age 70 born ca 1800 living with them in Sauk Co. Wisconsin. They had one daughter Ida Straw born 1855 Wisc. But by 1870 she not with the family. The 1900 census indicated that Ida has died. They adopted Jennie born ca 1868 and William born ca 1862, unknown parents, but was not from same family. Andrew was first married on 3-4-1849 to Amanda Cross in Dodge Co. I believe Amanda died early before 1854. It is uncertain if Andrew and Isaac's wives were related, however both were Atkins. # 3. Elizabeth Ann b. 4-3-1825 Maine. Died 1915 FAG # 87492452. Married 1-6-1843 Hollis, York Co. Maine to Freeman Bickford, son of Ira and Lydia Bickford. They all moved to Dodge Co. Wis. by 1845. He is not with the family in the Wisconsin's 1855 State census. His first name might have been Charles, it is known fact that a Charles Straw was connected to Enoch and Betsy in 1863 per a law suit. # 6. Isaac Newton 5-9-1833 Maine. Died 5-23-1901 Hamburg, Fremont Co. Iowa. Recorded page 239 Fremont County deaths records on page 239. Burial place. Hamburg Cemetery. FAD # 191121300.. Isaac , Ellen, Nellie and Charles's family returned to Hamburg, Iowa by 1901. In the 1900 census they have granddaughters Maude Straw ( William Newton's and Drusilla Hands daughter) and granddaughter Nellie Kennedy-Rumsby ( Harriet's daughter)living with them. Son Charles, wife Della and their son Guy live next to them and daughter Ida May Straw and husband C. L. Willoughby lived next to Charles. Some researchers say Isaac died in 1925 in Missouri while others report Oregon, they just didn't do the research to prove his death place. Son Charles E Straw's daughter Floy Ellen Straaw was born 9-17-1901 at Hamburg. per her birth records. Isaac and Ellen by the 1900 census had 10 children and only 3 alive at the time. This would have been William Newton, Charles E. and Ida Mae, Their known children were; John F 1859 Wisconsin., William Newton 1865 Illinois, Charles Edward 1874 Iowa., Harriet "Hattie" 1860 Wisconsin, Ida May 1866 Illinois to 1940 Missouri has Mo. death cert. , Enoch 1867 and Caroline 1869 Iowa. Now some Straw family researchers claim that Enoch and Betsy had a son named Charles L. Straw born Jan. 7, 1828 but offer no proof. Only that a Charles L. Straw born in Maine and died in Manhattan, New York.No records for this person in all census records or other U.S. records until this death record. This Charles Straw's death record states he was born in 1829 and no birth place documented. There is only one birth record for Enoch and Betsy's son born on that day and it is Enoch Lorenzo Straw. If he had a twin, his birth would have been recorded as well. |
