Erma Jessie Meier was born on February 23rd, 1919 in Du Bois, Nebraska to William F. and Ida Parli Meier. Erma was one of twelve children. She spent her childhood and attended school in DuBois, graduating from DuBois High School in 1937. Erma went to Peru State Teachers College and graduated from Peru with a teaching degree in 1941. She was 93. Erma Jessie Meier was born on February 23rd, 1919 in Du Bois, Nebraska to William F. and Ida Parli Meier. Erma was one of twelve children. She spent her childhood and attended school in DuBois, graduating from DuBois High School in 1937. Erma went to Peru State Teachers College and graduated from Peru with a teaching degree in 1941. While at Peru, Erma met Ben O. Sheldon. They were married on August 27th, 1941. Ben and Erma lived in Rock Springs, Wyoming, then in Greenbelt, Maryland during the war. After that they lived in Lincoln, Nebraska and Gunnison, Colorado. On a cold, snowy day in December, 1950, they moved to Hotchkiss. The North Fork Valley, Hotchkiss, and Barrow Mesa in particular, was Erma's beloved home for the next sixty two years. Erma raised her four children while helping Ben with the orchards, the hay fields, and the dairy. Erma was an excellent cook. She loved to can and bake. Those who ate at her table will always remember her chocolate malt ice cream, pecan and cinnamon rolls, and giblet gravy. Erma did not like to garden. She was a leader for many years of the Barrow Mesa 4-H Club. Erma was a member of the United Brethren Church as a child, the United Methodist Church in her early years in Hotchkiss, and the Bible Baptist Church in later years. Erma particularly loved playing pinochle with a group of their friends. Erma was laid to rest with her husband, her son, and granddaughter at Riverside Cemetery in Hotchkiss on December 8th, 2012. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.
