Description	:	A car-train collision resulted in the death of one woman on a county road southwest of Carleton last Wednesday, Aug. 16. Pronounced dead was 84 year old Mrs. Erma Tegtmeier of Carleton. She was a passenger in the car driven by Mr. B.D. Potter also from Carleton. Also in the car was Mrs. Helen Potter, wife of the driver. Read More	A car-train collision resulted in the death of one woman on a county road southwest of Carleton last Wednesday, Aug. 16. Pronounced dead was 84 year old Mrs. Erma Tegtmeier of Carleton. She was a passenger in the car driven by Mr. B.D. Potter also from Carleton. Also in the car was Mrs. Helen Potter, wife of the driver. The Potter vehicle was heading north on the county road when the accident occurred. The car struck the rear part of the front unit of the train, causing considerable damage to the engine, according to Carl Forrest, Deputy Sheriff. The car, after hitting the train, made one complete revolution, throwing Mrs. Tegtmeier through the back window. Mrs. Potter,who was sitting in the front seat, was thrown to the back seat. The car, which sustained damage to the front and rear. was totaled. The first unit of the train suffered a knocked off crankcase drain valve, a broken airline, damaged traction motor and damaged steps and handrail. "I was driving north on the county road," Potter said. "I did not see the train until just before the collision." Henry Batterman, Marysville, Ks., engineer of the Union Pacific Extra No. 188 said, "I was riding in the engine and saw the vehicle coming. It appeared to be slowing, and I thought it was getting stopped in time. "However," Batterman said, "The front engine had not cleared the crossing when we felt the collision. The front unit was broken loose from the rest of the train, which disconnected the airline and set the brakes." Mrs. Tegtmeier's body was found approximately 55 feet from the point of impact. The car was pushed 39 feet, six inches from the point of collision. Hebron Journal-Register Wednesday August 23, 1972. Erma Tegtmeier, 84, Carleton, died Wednesday in car-train accident. Survivors: sons, Oscar, Davenport, Clarence, Burchard; daughter, Mrs. Raymond Light, Omaha; brother, Marion Sommerhalder, Steinauer, John, Tecumseh; sister, Mrs. Margaret Hunzaker, Pawnee City; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday, Salem United Church of Christ, Steinauer. Burial Salem Church Cemetery. Lincoln Journal August 17, 1972.
