Read More	GERKEN, ERNA MARIE—Erna Marie Gerken was born to Michael Leitner and Elizabeth Moser Leitner on May 14, 1900, at Sutton, and passed away on January 1, 1987, at the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva at the age of 86 years, & months, and 18 days. She was one of ten children in the family. She was raised on the family farm near Sutton and attended a country school nearby. On March 15, 1924, she was united in marriage to Emil J. Gerken in Council Bluffs, Ia. The Lord blessed this union with two children: Phyllis and Norman. Erna and Emil farmed south of Grafton until 1948 when they moved to their home in Geneva. She was a member of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Grafton and after moving to Geneva became a member of the Grace Lutheran Church. In 1984, Erna and Emil celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Mrs. Gerken was hardworking, kind and thoughtful of others. She took pride and spent many hours in her large vegetable and flower garden. Erna had enjoyed good health until suddenly becoming ill on December 28. She was admitted to the Fillmore County Hospital. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Emil; a son-in-law, George Day of Denver, Co., sisters, Leah Lydia, Nellie and Emily; and brothers, Eugene, Alexander and Michael Jr. She is survived by two children, Phyllis Day of Denver, Col., and Norman Gerken of Lincoln; a sister, Lillian Hill of Kearney; a daughter-in-law, Donna Gerken, wife of Norman; four step grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren and many nephews and nieces and friends. Funeral services were conducted from the Grace Lutheran Church in Geneva on Tuesday, January 6, with Pastor Stuart Zak officiating. Mrs. Paul Baumann accompanied Susan Baumann who sang “Nearer My God to Thee” and “King of Love, My Shepherd Is.” Those serving as pallbearers were Lemoine E. Anderson, Larry A. Biester, Hubert Gerken, Pauly Griess, Mike D. Kapperman and Joe E. Schelkopf. Interment was in the Geneva public cemetery. The Nebraska Signal January 8th, 1987 page 5.
