Read More	GERKEN, EMIL JOHN—Emil John Gerken was born to William Gerken and Mary Hartman Gerken on February 20, 1899, at Grafton, and passed away on October 6, 1984, at Heritage Nursing Home in Geneva, at the age of 85 years, seven months and 16 days. He was one of six children. Emil was baptized as an infant and was instructed in God’s Word and confirmed in the St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran church of Grafton on April 16, 1916, by Pastor F. L. Brenner. On March 15, 1924, he was united in marriage to Erna M. Leitner in Council Bluffs, Ia. The Lord blessed this union with two children. Emil and Erna farmed south of Grafton until 1948 when they moved to Geneva, after which he did various jobs. This past spring they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Failing health this past summer forced him to enter Fillmore County Hospital where he passed away. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, George Day of Denver, sisters, Amanda Bohlen and Emma Biester; brothers, Walter, Theodore and Ernest. He is survived by his wife Erna, two children, Phyllis of Denver and Norman of Lincoln; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Norman (Donna) Gerken of Lincoln; four step-grandchildren; one cousin, Margaret Buschmeyer of St. Edward; and nephews, nieces and friends. Funeral services were conducted at Grace Lutheran church, Geneva, on Wednesday, October 10, with the Rev. Stuart Zak officiating. Elizabeth Baumann was organist and the soloist, Susan Baumann, sang “The King of Love My Shepherd Is” and “Nearer My God to Thee.” Committal services were held at the Geneva public cemetery.
