He had been in failing health for the past two years and critically ill for the past two weeks. Born May 23, 1918, in Baltimore, Md., he was the son of the late Ernest A. and Margaret E. (Starner) Harbaugh. He moved to the Waynesboro area as a child and attended St. Andrew Catholic School, Waynesboro. Mr. Harbaugh graduated from Washington Township High School with the Class of 1937. He and his wife, Arvetta L. (Decker) Harbaugh, were married Aug. 2, 1946 in St. Andrew Catholic Church. They had lived at the present residence since June 1963. Following high school graduation, Mr. Harbaugh was employed as a journeyman machinist at Landis Machine Co., Waynesboro, until 1941. He served as a combat engineer in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater from February 1941 until December 1945. He continued to serve in the U.S. Army from December 1947 to April 1963, including the Korean Conflict. During this time, he was a non-commissioned officer in charge of ordnance and armament sections at a number of military bases through out the United States and Germany. Mr. Harbaugh retired as a master sergeant. In 1963, he returned to Landis Machine Co., where he was employed in the methods department until his retirement in 1980 after 17 years of service. Mr. Harbaugh was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church, where he served as an usher. He was also a member of Knights of Columbus Council 2068 of Waynesboro. He was a lifetime member and past commander of William Max McLaughlin VFW Post 695, Waynesboro, and lifetime member of ATH&L Fire Co., also of Waynesboro. He was also a member of Cascade American Legion Post 239 and Brothers of the Brush of Waynesboro. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Shirley L. Sims of Laurel, Md., Patricia A. Shaffer of Hagerstown and Pamela F. Harbaugh of Waynesboro; two sons, Ernest F. Harbaugh, Jr. of Hagerstown and Stephen J. Harbaugh of Cascade; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; two sisters, Mary L. Hall of Virginia Beach, Va., and Margaret E. Beach of Okeechobee, Fla.; and three brothers, John R. Harbaugh of Bel Air, Ohio, Joseph E. Harbaugh of Waynesboro and Clarence D. Harbaugh of Parma, Ohio. He was preceded in death by three brothers, James A. Harbaugh, George E. Harbaugh and Robert B. Harbaugh. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Andrew Catholic Church, 12 N. Broad St., with Father Thomas J. Hemler officiating. Burial will be in Bethel Church Cemetery, Cascade. Military graveside services will be conducted by Charles M. Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard of Chambersburg. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in Grove Funeral Home, Waynesboro, with a wake service at 8.
