Read More	The Nebraskana Society Biography Before 1936, Nebraska, USA Ernest Joseph Axtell Rice has been a resident of the state for fifty years. He was born at Grinnell, Iowa, January 7, 1866, son of John Newton and Amy Axtell Rice. His father, a farmer, was born in Pennsylvania, October 10, 1833, and died at Harvard, November 16, 1920. His mother, whose family is closely connected with that of Abraham Lincoln, was born in Pennsylvania, in 1834, and died at Neligh, April 15, 1894. Mr. Rice attended elementary school in Iowa, was graduated from Doane Academy at Crete, and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Gates College and Doane College. He was a postgraduate student at the University of Wisconsin for two and a half years. Upon leaving school, Mr. Rice was in business for some time. Due to ill health be took up farming but always retained his interest in things educational. He has written some equisite (sic) poems, and is the composer of a song Fair Nebraska. He has served as manager of several commercial enterprises, has taught and been a school executive, and at the present time is superintendent of Brown County schools. He was president of the Nebraska County Superintendents Association for the year 1931-1932, a member of the Parent Teachers Association, and has served on various school boards. Mr. Rice is a member of the Chamber of Commerce and the Young Men's Christian Association. He is a life member of the Horticultural Society of Nebraska, and a member of the Nebraskana Socety (sic) and the First Congregational Church of Ainsworth. His leisure time is largely devoted to writing poetry. On December 26, 1900, he married Myrtice Mygatt at Long Pine. Mrs. Rice was born at Kenosha, Wisconsin, March 7, 1870. Three children were born to them, Meredith, on July 14, 1902, who died March 13, 1923; Albert Jesse, September 6, 1903, who was graduated from Hastings College in 1925, and is married to Olive Fullerton, a student of Hastings College; and Warren Lincoln, August 28, 1907, who completed a course in agriculture at the University of Nebraska, and is married to Burdetta Simmons, a student of Hastings College. Immediately following his college graduation, Albert spent several years in successful public school teaching. Both boys are farming, Albert near Ainsworth and Warren near Hastings. While in school Warren was a member of Alpha Zeta, honorary agricultural society, a member of the stock judging team and prominent in athletics. Residence: Ainsworth. (Photograph in Album).
