Rice of Clearwater, Nebr., died at the Lutheran hospital at Norfolk December 20, 1938. Death was due to heart trouble and other complications. Franklin H. Rice was born April 21, 1862 to a family of four brothers and three sisters in Roseville, Ill. His boyhood days were spent in Grinnell, Iowa. Later in 1876 as a young man he moved with his parents to a farm near Crete, Nebraska where he attended Doane academy. A few years later he was employed as a book keeper and helper in a lumber yard, also in a furniture and undertaking establishment at Friend, Nebraska. In about 1883 he with other members of his family became interested in homestead lands being offered by the government which became part of a 720 acre on which he has since resided. During the early years in Antelope county he helped in the building of the Oakdale-Scribner railroad. On May 6, 1886 he was united in marriage to Rena May Pendleton, a pioneer daughter and school teacher. The wedding was held at Gloversville Congregational church the community center of which each was a member. Among the greatest pleasures of life were the chats he enjoyed with friends. Also in recent years he enjoyed a trip through Californis, Texas and Colorado visiting relatives and former acquaintances. He was looking forward to a similar the winter in part for the benefit of his health. However, recent heart illness made hospital care imperative at which he spent ten days preceding the call to his reward. The loss of his companion, Mrs. Rena Rice in June of this year, was deeply felt although he looked toward the silver lining among the clouds. Among the survivors are two sons and two daughters, eight grandchildren and a host of friends. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Malder at the Antelope Creek church at 1:30p.m. Thursday. Interment at the Elgin Ccemetery.
