Description	:	Ernest “Ernie” Maitland Blaine was born in Atwood, Colorado, on October 30, 1915, and went to meet our Lord on March 24, 2016, at 100 years old. After graduating in 1929 from the 8th grade, Ernie began his life long career in the agriculture and farming business. Read More	Ernest “Ernie” Maitland Blaine was born in Atwood, Colorado, on October 30, 1915, and went to meet our Lord on March 24, 2016, at 100 years old. After graduating in 1929 from the 8th grade, Ernie began his life long career in the agriculture and farming business. He was a rancher for many years in the area of Crook County, Colorado and in 1944 moved to Willard, Colorado, to manage the Pawnee Valley Hereford Ranch. Later, Ernie moved his family to Sunnyside, Washington, and in 1954 he began his many years of working for Airport Ranches and Hull Farms, retiring in 1995. It was during his early years in ranching that he met the love of his life, Wilma Cornwell, at a sod-house dance in the Nebraska Plains. They wed on May 1, 1938, and raised their daughter, Dorothy, and two sons, Jim and Gary. Ernie and Wilma were married for 52 years before her passing in 1990. As a young man, Ernie’s hobbies were bull riding and horse breaking. As the story goes, he was never thrown, but only dismounted to retrieve his beloved cowboy hat. He always had a passion for gardening and you could always find him out in the garden with a hoe in hand. His large gardens always provided plenty of fruits and vegetables for the family and his neighbors. After retirement, Ernie became very active in the Sunnyside Senior Center. During that time he served as President, called bingo for many years, and always made his delicious desserts for the potlucks. Many may remember seeing him out walking, nearly every day. Always with his cowboy hat on, because he was never without it. He logged in many miles a day, especially on Tuesdays when it was time to check his lucky numbers at Bi-Mart. Ernest is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Dorothy and Don Harker (Sunnyside), son and daughter-in-law Jim and Kathy Blaine (Eatonville), and son and daughter-in-law Gary and Blanche Blaine (Prosser). He also leaves behind nine grandchildren, Sheri Mills, Valerie Kirkpatrick, Mike Harker, Shawna Foor, Lori Tayon, Shane Blaine, Robert Blaine, Terri Harker, and Joe Carr. Seventeen great grandchildren, Amanda Gutierrez, Kyle Bunger, Kevin Bunger,Brandon Mills, Kelsi Lekanoff, Kara Hart, Jena Kirkpatrick, Cody Blaine, Keith Bunger, Colby Blaine,Melissa Tayon, Rylie Blaine, Cheyanne Blaine, Zak Carr, Lantce Carr, TJ Carr, and Dylan Aplin. Six great-great grandchildren, Kaitlyn Gutierrez, Nicholas Bunger, Isaac Bunger, Braxton Hart, Hayden Lekanoff, and Shalya Turczyn. Also, two sisters-in-law Maxine Blaine and Virginia Blaine, both of Colorado and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceeding him in death are his loving wife Wilma, parents James and Rose Blaine, siblings Robert, George, Marvin, Earl, Eunice, and Shirley, and grandson-in-law Phil Tayon. Viewing and visitation will be held Friday, April 1, 2016 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm and Saturday, April 2, 2016 from 8:30 am to 10:00 am at Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside, WA. A Graveside service will be Saturday, April 2, 2016 at 11:00 am at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens in Sunnyside, Wa.
