Description	:	Ernest was born to James H. Bailey of Massachusetts and Mary Frances Butland of Maine. He appears in the 1885 Butte, MT school census with his father and sister, Ethel. By 1900 the family had moved to Lewistown, MT. The 1900 census indicates his siblings were Ethel (b. 1885), Augusta Valerie (b.1887), Myrtle L. (b. 1888), Pansy (b. 1889), James Archie (b. 1890), Leonard (b. 1894), and Ralph (b. 1897). There is evidence that his father remarried and had a son named Melvin L. The 1900 census indicates his siblings were Ethel (b. 1885), Augusta Valerie (b.1887), Myrtle L. (b. 1888), Pansy (b. 1889), James Archie (b. 1890), Leonard (b. 1894), and Ralph (b. 1897). There is evidence that his father remarried and had a son named Melvin L. Bailey (b.1906), a half brother to Ernest. His death certificate states that Ernest died October 3, 1908 of strangulation at about 25 years of age. The informant on the certificate was his brother, Leonard. Ernest's death was picked up by the Helena, MT newspaper "Montana Plainsdealer" Oct 9, 1908: " Advices from Lewistown tell of the murder of Ernest Bailey, aged 28, a well known and popular athelete of that city. Bailey was found strangled to death in his room in a lodging house. His body was found in a sitting position, against the door jam; a rope has been passed over the door knob, the other end being tied around the man's thigh. A suicide theory was advanced, but this is scouted by the officers. Bailey was in good circumstances."
