Ernie was born July 4, 1935, on a farm near Ryder, to Ernest and Coyla (Lindbo) Varty. He was raised in Douglas and graduated from high school there in 1953. After graduation, Ernie attended an automobile mechanic trade school in Fargo then entered the United States Army and served his country for two years. Upon his discharge from the military, Ernie returned to Douglas and fell in love with Bernice Hummel. They were married in December of 1957. They were married for almost forty-nine years when Bernice passed away. Ernie worked most of his career for the North Dakota State Highway Department in Minot and Bismarck and for several years for MidDakota Clinic before he retired. Ernie loved his family and had a passion for fishing, which he did spring, summer, fall and winter. He was extremely generous with his talents and fixed many car motors, painted a lot of walls, remodeled, repaired and crossed many an item off the 'honey-do' list. Ernie was always ready to offer a helping hand and he made many, many friends along the way. A few years after Bernice passed away, Ernie was blessed to be reunited with childhood classmate, Marilyn Haines, who brought the sparkle back to his life and completed the family once again. Together, they moved to Little Falls, Minn., in 2010 to be closer to family. Ernie will be remembered lovingly by his wife, Marilyn; his children, Kim (Mike) Reinisch and Terry (Michael Kaslow); his grandchildren, Meagan (Mike) Reissy and Andy; and his sisters, Ivadell (Orlin) Larson, Verna (Dale) Ballard and Deb (Duane) Houdek. He is preceded in death by his wife, Bernice; his parents, Ernest and Coyla; his father and mother-in-law, Rudy and Edna Hummel; and three brothers, Virgil, Edwin and Alvin (Buzz).
