Read More	OBIT- Ernie Sam Shannon March 23, 1924 - June 3, 2006 Ernie Sam Shannon Sr, was born March 23, 1924, the seventh and youngest child of John and Elizabeth Hunter Shannon of Choctaw,Arkansas. Sam has and will always hold a special place in the hearts of his family and friends. Reared by parents who were caring and hard working, he learned quickly to be mindful of others and to never be idle. Through the years his family provided a home to others who needed a place of residence. Giving was part of each lesson that he learned from his parents. He and his family moved to the Jonesboro area when Sam was young. It was there he put his now famous energy into playing basketball. His wife Ernestine tells about the first time she ever saw Sam was on the basketball court. They were married on March 21, 1943. Shortly afterwards he joined the Navy during WWII. When he returned to Jonesboro, he secured a job with the E.C. Barton Company. He became the youngest store manager of Barton Lumber stores, when he moved to Pine Bluff, in 1949. In Pine Bluff he was a Boy Scout leader and a member of various civic organizations including the Kiwanis Club and the American Red Cross. During these years he was a past President of the Arkansas Hardware Association, past President of the Arkansas Lumberman's Association, and a board member of Mid-America Lumberman's Association. Returning to Clinton in 1962, he, along with his brothers, became owners of Shannons' Supply for twenty nine years. He came to know the people of the Clinton I Choctaw area as few others have. He served on various committees and community projects including those of the Lion's Club International and the Clinton Chamber of Commerce. His loving service to others endeared him to so many. He was a cancer survivor and participated in cancer awareness projects. He was a Hospice volunteer and for many years he maintained the Huie Hunter Hill cemetery plot records. One of his special projects has been the nursing home in Clinton, being a visitor there most everyday, he sought to bring cheer to all the patients. He served on the board during the planning and building of the Ozark Health Medical Center. Although he was an avid Razorback sports fan, his idea of Hog Heaven was being a hospital Auxiliary member. He showed a desire to be more than a volunteer. He enjoined himself to a unique group of people who serve, without bias, all mankind. No favor was ever too large or small when he was called upon. His family became resigned to the fact they could not slow their Gramps down for a needed rest. People mattered so much to him and his joy was in service to others. God blessed him with that ability until his last day on Earth. The Clinton Chamber of Commerce awarded him the 2005 Volunteer of the Year. Ozark Health rewarded him earlier this year also by naming a hall in the hospital in his honor. His work at the Clinton KFC earned him the reputation as Clinton's Colonel, of which he was known far and wide. His greatest devotion was to his Heavenly Father. He loved his church and his church family, young and old. He served them as Elder at the Choctaw church of Christ. Sam and his wife, Ernestine, studied God's Word daily and always tried to walk in the footsteps of the Lord. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Leister, Jim, Eardie and Bob, a sister, Naucie Shannon Burnett and two great-grandchildren. He is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Ernestine Haag Shannon, who always supported his efforts, one sister, Marie Shannon Edwards, sons Robert and his wife Donna, Sam Jr. and his wife Becky. He is also survived by grandchildren: Mollie and husband Randy Franks, Kellie and husband Carl Miller, Sam III and wife Tara Shannon, Robert Shannon Jr., Jon Shannon, Julie Shannon Quattlebaum, Lee Shannon, Heidi and husband Chad Meins, and Hunter Shannon. He was blessed with five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild and a host of loving nieces and nephews. Gramps has been a great blessing to all who passed his way and to some who only heard about him. He set an example for all of us to follow in life and in death. Services will be Wednesday at 10:00 AM at the Choctaw church of Christ. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at Roller McNutt Funeral Home in Clinton. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations may be made to the Southern Christian Home in Morrilton, the Chalca mission fund, or the Choctaw Food Bank.
