The day was spent most agreeably to all in picnicking and visiting and to say that it was a delightful occasion is putting it all too mildly. Aside from the guests in whose honor the gathering was held those present were Mr. and Mrs. Christ Ruckdaschel, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Ruckdaschel and family, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Ruckdaschel, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Oldag and daughter, Mrs. Wm. Article from the "Herald" of Postville, Iowa dated 2 Feb 1939: Transportation Changes Much In 69 Years - - - - - - - - - Trip Which Required Forty- Four Days Now Made In Eleven Hours - - - - - - - - - Ernst Ruckdaschel and his niece, Miss Elsie Barghahn, of Staplehurst, Nebr., John Ruckdaschel of Waco, York county, Nebr., and Mr. and Mrs. Herman Ruckdaschel of Utica, Nebr., arrived here last Thursday to be present at the funeral of John Ruckdaschel, uncle of the three gentlemen, of this city. The first named gentleman was born at Springfield, south of town, but went to Nebraska when one year old. He has kept in constant touch with his old home town throughout the years by reading the Herald and called at this office to renew his subscription while here last week. Ernst told us that when his parents left here 69 years ago, they made the trip to Nebraska overland with a team of oxen in 44 days. Forty years ago a group of their relatives from here went to visit them by horse and buggy and it took these eleven days to make the journey. Last Thursday the party mentioned above left Staplehurst at four a.m., and were in Postville at three p.m., making the 440 mile trip in eleven hours with several stops en route and mid-winter roads to contend with. Thus has transportation progressed since the pioneers drifted westward. He never married, but leaves three sisters, Mrs. Louise Fehlhafer, Mrs. Mary Suhr and Mrs. Sophia Barghahn, all of Staplehurst; four brothers, John and Otto of Waco, Herman of Utica and George of Staplehurst. Services will be held Wednesday at the home at 1 p.m., and at 1:30 at the Lutheran church in Staplehurst, Rev. C. C. Bangert officiating.
