Hanna, 79, went to be with the Lord while surrounded by his family on Friday, Jan. 9, 2009, after spending his final days on his farm near Cedar.He was born on Nov. 24, 1929, in Mahaska County, the son of Clair and Fern DeWitt Hanna. Hanna, 79, went to be with the Lord while surrounded by his family on Friday, Jan. 9, 2009, after spending his final days on his farm near Cedar.He was born on Nov. 24, 1929, in Mahaska County, the son of Clair and Fern DeWitt Hanna. Following school he started working as a farm hand, and helping out at Denniston and Partridge Lumber in Taintor.He then served his country in the United States Army. On March 12, 1952, he was united in marriage to Marcene Dykstra at Ladd Air Force Base in Fairbanks, Alaska.Upon his return from the military, he worked for 13 years at VanGorp and DeKock Furniture in Oskaloosa as an appliance service man. In 1966, they moved to their farm near Fremont where Ervin began farming full time. He farmed for 32 years until retiring in 1998. In retirement he enjoyed helping out on the Nollen Farm. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, gardening, and mushroom hunting.He was an active member of Central Reformed Church; serving as a deacon, a Sunday School officer, and as an usher for many years. His family includes his wife of over 56 years, Marcene Hanna, of rural Cedar; his son and his wife: Duane and Sheryl Hanna, of Post Falls, Idaho; two daughters and their husbands: Diane and Mike Darland, of Fremont, and Darla and Doug Keast, of Altoona; a daughter-in-law: Lori Hanna, of New Tripoli, Pa.; nine grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife: Elwood and Beverly Hanna, of What Cheer; a sister-in-law: Donna Hanna, of Pella; and a brother-in-law: Marvin Moody, of Eddyville.He was preceded in death by his parents; a son: Douglas Hanna; a granddaughter: Ashley Darland; two brothers: Raymond and Paul Hanna; and two sisters: Deloris "Dee" Moody, and a sister, Margaret Hanna, in infancy.Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 13, at 10:30 a.m. in the Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa with the Rev. Don DeGlopper officiating.Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery near Leighton with committal rites given by the Rev. Virgil Dykstra.There will be a family prayer service on Tuesday at 10:15 a.m. in the fellowship hall of the church.The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.Visitation will begin Monday morning after 11 and the family will be at the Bates Funeral Chapel Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. to greet friends and relatives.Memorials may be made to the Mahaska Hospice Serenity House.
