Whalen, Battle Creek business man, died Sunday night at the Veteran's Hospital in Hot Springs, South Dakota, which he had entered about a month ago for treatment of tuberculosis, with which he had suffered the past year. Accompanied by Mrs. Whalen, the body was brought to Battle Creek and funeral services were held at the Baptist church Thursday afternoon. Following the church services the body was taken to Stanton under escort of local Legionaires and military burial rites were given at the cemetery of that city. Born at Stanton, Nebraska, July 15, 1891, Mr. Whalen had reached the age of 44 years, 8 months and 7 days. He grew to manhood in Stanton and for some time was employed at Norfolk. In June, 1918, he enlisted for overseas service in the United States Army, and was in France when the armistice was declared in November of the same year. He was married in Norfolk to Mrs. Kate Carrico in 1926 and in 1927 the two moved to Battle Creek and have since conducted a restaurant there. Surviving are the widow, his mother, Mrs. Minnie Whalen, and three step-daughters, Mrs. Myron Horman and Miss Vera Carrio of Norfolk, and Miss Clarice Carrico, Battle Creek. There are three brothers, William Walen, Battle Creek, and Clyde and Harvey of Norfolk.
