She began her work with the Des Moines schools in 1921 and was girls' adviser at North High School for many years before she retired in 1958. She was a member o P.E.O. and Plymouth Congregational Church. Survivors include three sisters, Mrs,Eva Nelson of Emmetsburg, Mrs, Olive Lewis of Burlington and Mrs. Irene Smiley of Mason City. p. 19, c.6 OBITUARY - EMMETSBURG DEMOCRAT, July 25, 1968 Graveside Rites for Miss Whirry Miss Essie Marie Whirry died July 21 at Iowa Methodist Hospital after several months of ill health. She was born at Osage, Ia. and spent her early years in Emmetsburg where she graduated from hgih school and then entered Grinnell College where she received a BA degree in 1916. Later she received a master's degree from Columbia University. She entered the Des Moines school system in 1921. She taught history at West High School, later transferred to North High School and after teaching for several years became girls' advisor until her retirement in 1959. In this capacity she was instrumental in guiding and counseling many students to continue their education in college. Many honors came to Miss Whirry. In 1957 she received the Grinnell College Alumni Citation. She was one of 12 women honored by the Natioal Associationof Women's Deans and Counselors. Delat Gamma Association honored her with membership in the Honorary Educational Association. Miss Whirry was a member of Plymouth Congretational Chirch, the Professional Women's League, the Des Moines Women's Club, the United Nations, PEO, A.A.U.W., Grinnell Women's Club Good Govermnent League, YWCA Counselor for yung business women. The family suggests that memorials be sent to Wesley Acres. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery at Emmetsburg where p. 5, c.4
