Estella Russell was born May 13, 1855, at London, Canada, the daughter of William and Julia Ann Russell. Her parents, of pioneering stock, were moving from their parental home near London, England, and had paused for a year at London Canada, on their way to their new home in America. Estella Russell was born May 13, 1855, at London, Canada, the daughter of William and Julia Ann Russell. Her parents, of pioneering stock, were moving from their parental home near London, England, and had paused for a year at London Canada, on their way to their new home in America. While pausing here, a daughter, Estella, came to bless their home. Soon they were on their way again to their new home near Elmo, Mo. Here they settled on the new land and made their home. Estella grew to womanhood, studying the schools of her day, as time and work would permit. Finishing her formal schooling, she took up the duties of wife and mother. She and her husband made their new home near Hopkins, Mo. Here the family grew as children came to bless the home. Not long after the new land in Nebraska called and the family moved in 1886 to Otoe county, settling near Sterling. Douglas and other neighboring towns were not laid out as yet, as this was just a new country being settled. Then in 1904, again the call of new land brought them to a farm northwest of Fairmont, where they lived until 1920, when they moved to Fairmont. Many changes came to the country. New hardships were endured because there were few comforts to ease the pain of them. Yet these hardships bred a hardy life which is shown in her many earthly years, having reached her ninety-fifth birthday the day before being called Home. October 24, 1875, she united in marriage with Samuel Guthrie at Hopkins, Mo. five children came to bless the home. John and Floyd died in their earlier years. Mrs. Guthrie was a faithful member and an active one in the Methodist church. Her love and delight was to be found in her church on the Sabbath day. She took an active part in the W.S.C.S. and the Blue Circle. She enjoyed the Sunset club and regretted the fact that she could not attend the last meeting, which was to honor her birthday. She leaves behind in her passing, two sons, Alfred H. of Fairmont and Melvin M. of Lincoln; one daughter, Mrs. Velma Walters of Inglewood, Cal.; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Mrs. Guthrie had reached her ninety-fifth year the day before God called her Home. She was active up to a few days before. She loved to cook, clean and are for her own home. She was seen daily about town, doing her regular sopping. She lived a good life and a long one, honored and respected for her part in living life. Funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon, May 18, in the Fairmont Methodist church, Rev. L.A. Fishel, the pastor, officiating. Interment was in the Fairmont cemetery.
