Esther Anna Neubauer was born November 29, 1914, on the family farm near Columbia, SD, the fourth of seven children born to Herman and Minnie (Kluck) Neubauer. She grew up on the farm and liked caring for the animals, and learned to cook and bake from her mother. She attended rural school, walking two miles to and from school the first two years. The family later moved to Westport, where she completed her education, and only had to walk a few blocks to school! This move to Westport also brought to the family the modern conveniences of running water, electricity and indoor plumbing. In order to help her family with the farm work, Esther did not continue on to high school. Instead, she assisted with the work of growing potatoes and milking cows, a chore she did not relish. Esther met her husband, William Riehl on a blind date. She was recuperating with an aunt and uncle in the Rochester, MN area following some surgery. Esther's cousin was taking his girlfriend to a movie, and asked a friend of his to come along so Esther would a companion, too. Esther and William were married in October of 1934 in the pastor's residence in Austin, MN. The couple made their home on a farm near Dexter, MN. They had been married about nine years, and already parents to their oldest daughter, Carol. Esther was pregnant with their second child, and a bitter cold snap made it necessary for William to get additional coal for the furnace. On his return to the farm, the tractor he was driving overturned, pinning him underneath and killing him. Esther later sold the farm, and returned to her parents' home near Columbia. She was always grateful for their generosity in welcoming her and the children into their home. Eventually Esther met Eldred "Kermit" Holty at a dance in the area. Their friendship deepened until they were married on September 2, 1946. They made their home in Columbia, where Kermit was operating a café, having learned to cook in the service. She joined him in the day-to-day operation of the café, and they worked side by side for many years. The work was demanding and left little time for vacations, however they did make an effort to close early on Friday nights so they could attend area dances. They did get to take one family vacation to western South Dakota. Kermit passed away on October 15, 2000. Esther continued to make her home in Hecla until moving to Oakes Good Samaritan Center in January of 2006. Esther was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Hecla and had been active in the Esther Circle there. She had belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary since 1948. Esther was truly a gracious lady, always willing to lend an ear and a hand to anyone in need. Her family meant the world to her. Esther is survived by three children: Dennis (Mary) Riehl of Kalispel, MT; Gary (Carol) Holty of Mitchell, SD; Linda (Jim) Flisrand of Buckly, WA; a son-in-law, Donald Dinger of Britton; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Delores Neubauer of Long View, WA. Preceding her in death were her parents, both husbands, her daughter, Carol Dinger, a grandson, two brothers: Gus and Elgar Neubauer; and four sisters: Lorna Johnson, Arvilla Rhoads, Clara Riehl and Hilda Wallace. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ JMM # 51179262 provided links to parents. ~ 5-19-2022
