Born Oct. 5, 1921, in Battle Creek, Iowa, Esther B. Miller was the daughter of William and Botilla (Christensen) Rossow. She and her five brothers and one sister were raised on a farm near Battle Creek. Esther attended country school, graduated from Battle Creek High School in 1933, and attended college in Winfield, Kan., where she earned a degree in parish work. On Aug. 28, 1966, she was united in marriage to Carl Miller Jr. in Battle Creek. The couple raised three children, Steve, Marc and Karla. Esther worked in Missouri and Oklahoma as a parish worker and later was employed at Iowa Des Moines Bank, Ida County State Bank and also as Ida County Treasurer. She taught piano lessons in Ida Grove for many years and enjoyed playing the organ at St. John's Lutheran Church in Battle Creek for 25 years. Esther enjoyed her family very much as well as reading and gardening. Survivors include three children, Steve (Jodi) Miller of Ida Grove, Marc Miller of Fort Dodge, Iowa, and Karla Miller of Glenwood, Iowa; six grandchildren, Tim Campbell of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Brandi Campbell of Sac City, Iowa, Tony (Danielle) Quail of Okinawa, Japan, Andy Quail of Brookings, S.D., and Alex Quail and Peyton Miller, both of Ida Grove; and two great-granddaughters, Marissa and Hayleigh Quail, both of Okinawa. Esther was preceded in death by her husband, Carl, on March 17, 2009; her parents; two brothers, Edgar and Verdien Rossow; and a sister, Eldora Streck.
