Despite what the headstone and death records read, she was born on May 1, 1831 in Parkman, Maine.* Her siblings: Laura Ann, Henry Martin, twins Rosanna Brainard and Rosilla Clough; Owen Oaks; Abigail Robinson; Sullivan Augustine; and George. Owen and Sullivan died young. The 1850 Federal Census finds 19-year-old Esther living with her parents, four siblings and her paternal grandfather, Ephraim Sr, in Augusta. Owen and Sullivan died young. The 1850 Federal Census finds 19-year-old Esther living with her parents, four siblings and her paternal grandfather, Ephraim Sr, in Augusta. On June 27, 1855, Esther married Swedish immigrant John P. Ankarlooo in Augusta. He was a dyer by trade. Soon after they married, the couple moved too Methuen, Massachusetts as they are found there in the 1855 census, enumerated on August 15, 1855. Esther and John had two children: Laura Etta born in 1856 and John August born in 1858. 1860: the family is living in Bangor, Maine 1870: they have moved to Manchester, NH where Esther lived the rest of her days. They have several boarders living with them and probably helping with John’s steam dying as one sews and the others work in a cotton mill. 1880: the household includes son John who is working with his father as a dyer 1895: Esther is widowed as John died in 1894 1900: Esther has a lodger in the home who is a seamstress 1904: Esther died of stomach cancer. She had been sick for about one year. She was living at 301 Amherst Street where she had been since 1899.
