His death certificate states his death was accidental in Dillon Colorado, he was returned to Manchester, NH to be buried in his parents lot. His death certificate states his death was accidental in Dillon Colorado, he was returned to Manchester, NH to be buried in his parents lot. He predeceased them.John was the 2nd of two children born to Swedish immigrant John P. Ankarloo and his wife Esther C. Leighton, a native of Maine. His sister, who was about two years older, was named Laura Etta. John's father was a very well respected dyer in the Northeast and John August worked with his father for a time as noted by his occupation of record in the 1880 census. On October 17, 1885, John married Gertrude Frances Austin of Fort Jackson, New York (d/o Charles H. Austin and Amanda Emeline Hodgkins). Gertrude reported in the 1900 census that she did not have any children. (She remarried after John's death but was widowed again by that time.) At some point, early in 1888, John traveled to Dillon, Colorado to work in a mine. According to the newspaper clips (see photos), he was killed in either a landslide or some kind of a mine accident. His body was returned to New Hampshire and he was buried at Valley Cemetery where his parents were eventually interred. Sources: Federal census, Massachusetts marriage, and New Hampshire death and burial records NOTE: There are several discrepancies of where John was born. In the 1860 census his parents report "Maine," in the 1870 census they report "New Hampshire," and the in 1880 census the record shows "Massachusetts." Any of the three are possible. This is further complicated by the fact that there is a town in both MA and NH by that name. But since the New Hampshire death record notes "Pittsfield" without noting a state abbreviation, so for now, the NH death record information should stand till additional info can be found.
