Description	:	Esther C. Gilbertson was born December 23, 1911 in Lincoln County, South Dakota, the daughter of Arndt and Alma (Marken) Gilbertson. She attended Pleasant Valley Country School #74 and graduated from Canton High School in 1928. Esther received her nursing degree at Swedish Hospital School of Nursing in Minneapolis, MN. Continuing her education, she received her BS from the University of Minnesota and her Masters at Columbia University in New York. Gilbertson was born December 23, 1911 in Lincoln County, South Dakota, the daughter of Arndt and Alma (Marken) Gilbertson. She attended Pleasant Valley Country School #74 and graduated from Canton High School in 1928. Esther received her nursing degree at Swedish Hospital School of Nursing in Minneapolis, MN. Continuing her education, she received her BS from the University of Minnesota and her Masters at Columbia University in New York. Upon completion of her education, she worked for the Department of Public Health in Minnesota. She enlisted in the Army at the onset of WWII, beginning a 35-year career as a commissioned officer in the Army and Public Health Services. Following WWII, she was assigned to a rehab program in Greece, and later had Public Health assignments in Mexico and South America. She was a nursing consultant in Washington, D.C., Atlanta, and San Francisco, before retiring to Sioux Falls in 1977. She attained the rank of Colonel upon her retirement. Esther wrote several training manuals for Home Health Aides through the National Council of Home Health Services. A member of First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, Esther was active with WELCA and Fidelis Circle. She was also a member of Sioux Valley Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed traveling and volunteering. A resident at Waterford At All Saints, she died Thursday, October 11, 2001 at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Luverne, and two sisters-in-law- Corinne and Mid. Those grateful for having shared her life are: two brothers - Maurice and Arnold, both of Canton, SD; seven nieces and nephews- Gloria Rops, Lennox, SD, Barbara Roe, Apple Valley, MN, Michael Gilbertson, Dakota Dunes, SD, Joanne Swenson, Rochester, MN, Julie Schirber, Houston, TX, Pat Stensland, Sioux Falls, SD, and Curt Gilbertson, Hudson, SD; and twenty great nieces and nephews.
