CHARLOTTE CARPENTER (Feb. 26, 1919- Dec. 31, 2006) Charlotte Carpenter, 87, of Sabetha died Sunday Dec. 31, 2006 at the Sabetha Community Hospital. She was born on a farm near Fairview on Feb. 26, 1919, the daughter of Henry and Sophia Fortmeyer Schneider. She graduated from Fairview High School. She wrote her first published poem at the age of 12, and it appeared in the children's page of the St. Joseph News Press. After that she wrote poetry off and on for school and a farewell poem for her senior class in high school. Charlotte married Kenneth N. Carpenter of Fairview on February 5, 1941. Five children were born to this union. He died March 31, 2001. She taught country school. In 1970 she attended the Decision School of Christian Writing at Billy Graham Headquarters in Minneapolis, where she learned to write contemporary poetry, such as one-thought poems. Since 1965, 250 poems and approximately 100 articles have been published with her by-line. REFRESHMENT was her first book. Charlotte was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Sabetha, DDD Unit, and Women's Missionary League of the Church. Also preceding her in death were four sisters, Ruth Lee, Rebecca Mueseier, Mary Sunderland and Josephine Schneider; and a brother, Harold Schneider. Survivors include four sons, Monte Carpenter of Baldwin, Md. Lanny Carpenter of Marysville, Dan Carpenter of Shawnee Mission and Mark Carpenter of Sabetha, a daughter, Nancy Flentie of Sabetha; 8 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Funeral services were Thursday at the First Lutheran Church in Sabetha. Interment was int eh Sabetha Cemetery.
