Esther was born to the Rev. David and Mrs. Kari Svennungsen at Leroy, Minn., on Dec. 12, 1916. She was the sixth of nine children. Esther was born to the Rev. David and Mrs. Kari Svennungsen at Leroy, Minn., on Dec. 12, 1916. She was the sixth of nine children. Her father was a Lutheran minister and her mother an accomplished organist and pianist. Esther was so proud of her Norwegian Lutheran heritage. Her father's and mother's ministry took the family to Daisy, N.D., then Worthington, Kenyon and Northfield, Minn., before settling at Big Sandy, Mont., in 1928. She graduated from Big Sandy high school in 1935. She was a cheedeader for the Big Sandy Pioneers and senior prom queen as well as a track star and swimmer. She married her high school sweetheart, Don L. Brown in 1940. They lived in several Montana cities and towns, as her husband transferred many times in his 40-plus year career with the Montana Fish and Game Department: Harlowton, Roundup, Lewistown, Great Falls, Helena, Kalispell and Bozeman. Esther is best known for her beautiful soprano voice. She began singing when she was 2 years old, singing "Keep the Home Fires Burning," when the troops came home from World War I. She sang in Lutheran churches throughout Montana, as well as with the Helena Symphony Chorale and the Bozeman Symphonic Choir. Christmas services were not complete unless Esther sang one of her beautiful Christmas solos. She sang for weddings, funerals, and non-profit organizations throughout her life. Many shows in the Flathead Valley were opened with Esther's singing of the "Star Spangled Banner," and often "Montana, My Home," composed by her brother Rolf Svennungsen. One highlight of Esther's singing was as a member of a small group of singers and actors from the Flathead who performed "Spoon River Anthology," telling the stories and songs of the trials and tribulations of homesteaders. Esther's ministry was her singing. Through her songs and unwavering faith, she was a shining example of God's unconditional love for us. It is perfectly fitting that she rejoined the source of her strength during this Season of Lights. Esther is survived by her husband, Don, of Helena, daughters Bonnie Wallem (Jerry), Kalispell; Marsha Paulson (Daryl), Bozeman; Judith Brown McKenna (Jim), Bozeman; and son Scott (Nedra), Helena. She has 9 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Three brothers and sisters-in-law also survive: Arthur and Betty Svennungsen of Big Sandy; Amos and Mary Svennungsen of Whitelish; and Paul and Sheila Svennungsen of Shelby, as well as 25 nieces and nephews; and their children and grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Rolf, Steinar, David and Phillip, and her sister, Ruth. Funeral services will be conducted at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church, Helena, at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 27. The Rev. Loren Gustafson will minister. Burial will be in the Big Sandy Cemetery
