Devitt died Wednesday morning of last week at her home in Oak. She leaves to mourn her death, four daughters and two sons, also many other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held at the M.E. church Friday afternoon with Rev. Jason Adams of Hastings officiating. Interment was made in the Nelson cemetery. Pallbearers were Messrs. D. Eillers (sic), N. Benjamin, E.B. Allen, Jas. Leger, Fred Runge and J. Meyers. - Oak (Special Correspondence.) NOTE: The first notice states survived by "two daughters" and the second notice states "four daughters". The Nelson Gazette, Thursday, July 13, 1933; pg. 8 Ester (sic) Elle (sic) Matheny (sic), daughter of Eliab and Benthena (sic), was born at Caldwell, Noble county (sic), Ohio, November 12, 1857, and departed from her late home at Oak, Nebraska, July 5, 1933. She had attained the age of 75 years, 7 months and 23 days. On September 4, 1877, she was united in marriage to Alexander M. Devitt who preceded her in death on February 6, 1926. To them seven children were born: Otto Devitt, Bassett, Nebr.; Mrs. Bertha Phillips, Carr, Colo.; Omer Devitt, Edgar, Nebraska; Mrs. Belle Schafer, Nelson, Nebr.; Mrs. Mae Lawson, Minatare, Nebr.; and Chloe at home. The eldest daughter, Mrs. Tillie Phillips of Tingle, Wyo.; passed away in July, 1925. She also leaves 15 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren to mourn her death. Mrs. Devitt came with her family to Nebraska during the early nineties and located in Clay county (sic); later removing to Nuckolls county (sic). For the past 19 years she has lived near and in Oak, where she acquired a large circle of friends. Mrs. Devitt not only sought to provide a comfortable home for her family, but also sought to set before them the Christian example. She was converted and joined the M.E. church at Onng (sic), Nebr., and later transferred her membership to the M.E. church at Oak. She believed in God and she sought the instruction of His word. She enjoyed the fellowship of tose (sic) of like precious faith. At the end of life's long journey she fonud (sic) in Him the faithful guide across the troubled waters.
