Ushers were Russell A. Englund and Bernard Lindell. Casket bearers were Marion Fender, James Isaacson, Floyd Ruhl, Jake Schmidt, Leslie Swanson, and Dale Wallin. Interment was at the Essex Cemetery. Victor Emanuel Nelson was born January 16, 1891 in Fremont Township, Page County, Iowa, the son of Nels J. Nelson and Caroline Brown Nelson. He was baptized and confirmed in the Fremont Covenant Church. After finishing public school education, he worked on farms. He served in the U. S. Army in the First World War. He died Monday, January 13 at 2:39 p.m. and about 11 hours after his wife died. Besides surviving children, he is survived by one sister, Mrs. Oscar (Minnie) Olson, Essex and one brother, Albert of Clarinda. He was preceded in death by four sisters and one brother. Esther Elvera Swanson was born November 12, 1893 in rural Essex, the daughter of Henry Mathilda Nelson Swanson. She was baptized in the St. John's Lutheran Church in Essex, and confirmed in the Bethesda Lutheran Church. Esther's mother, Mathilda, died when she was 12. The father continued to keep house for nine children with the help of Esther and an older sister, Clara. The Nelsons farmed in the Essex and Yorktown areas of Page county until their retirement to Essex in 1957. For some years they belonged to the Bethesda Lutheran Church, but for the last 14 years of their lives they were members of St. John's Essex. Esther died at Garden View Care Center, January 13 at 3:30 a.m. at age 81. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Paul (Lillie) Haley, Omaha; two brothers, Clarence and Theodore, both of Essex and she was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister. Joinly they were survived by three children; Lysle Nelson, Essex, Regina, Mrs. Duane Wallin, Essex, and Darrel Nelson, Pueblo, Colorado. Also by six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Carson Hackett funeral home was in charge of the double rites, which was noted to be the second one of this kind to be arranged by them, the first one being in 1955, for Mr. and Mrs. Ed Wallin, parents of Duane Wallin of Essex.
