Esther Henke was born July 27, 1917, on the farm home at Hannover, the daughter of Eli and Mary (Plenge) Henke. While growing up, she attended eight years of parochial school with her future brother-in-law, Theodore Kaelberer, as her teacher. Esther worked in the Hannover Store but was always a nurse at heart. Throughout her life, she demonstrated her love of caring for others by taking care of several family members. Later, she worked at Elm Crest Manor and in 2000 was very pleased to be name Volunteer of the Year at the age of 83. In 1936, she married John C. Kaelberer and together, they farmed south of New Salem and had four children. Their home was always open to family and friends. Once you entered Esther's kitchen you were automatically ready for a cup of coffee, something to eat and a game of cards. She truly was the "Hostess with the Mostest." When not at home, she loved traveling to see family and friends. Her family often teased her that she always had a suitcase packed under the bed in the event someone mentioned going on a trip. At the age of 81, she saw the ocean for the first time and was 83 when she attended her first professional hockey game. Esther was also an active member of Zion Lutheran Church, participating in LWML and choir and teaching Sunday school for 14 years. Esther is survived by her four children, Harriet (Herb) Henke, Hannover, James (Marianne) Kaelberer, Reed Point, Mont., Barbara (Douglas) Kautzman, Bismarck, and Kelly (Robin) Kaelberer, New Salem; 17 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; her loving sister, Marion Reinke, Bismarck; and two brothers, Nelvin (Charlotte) Henke, Hannover, and Clarence Henke, New Salem. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John, who died Feb. 11, 2001; five brothers, Arthur, Harold, Elmer, Henry and Walter Henke; three sisters, Adela Speckman, Caroline Bueligen and Rosella Oestrich; a great-granddaughter, Olivia Moore; and a special friend, Edna Kaelberer.
