Death of Mrs. Esther J. Hughes. Mrs. Esther J. Hughes, widow of Barnet Hughes, died at her home on Mechanic Street at 5:40 o'clock last Sunday morning, aged 70 years, 10 months and 24 days. She had been sick nearly six weeks but for the last few days she had not been expected to live from one hour to another. She was born in Holderness, now Ashland, and leaves one daughter, Lucy A., wife of Dr. J.M. Cheney. Mrs Hughes was one of the most highly esteemed women in the town and will be greatly missed. Her daughter, Lucy A. was the first child born in Ashland after its division from Holderness. The funeral was held at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Cheney Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock and the flowers were many and beautiful. Hughes She Was One of Ashland's Best Known Women. Mrs. Esther Jane Hughes, widow of the late Barnett Hughes died last Sunday at her home on Main street at the age of 70 years 10 months and 32 days. Mrs. Hughes was born in Holderness (now Ashland) March 8, 1824 and excepting for a short time, lived in Ashland all of her life. She was married to the late Barnet Hughes, who died in 1886. She leaves one daughter, Mrs. J.M. Baker, one brother, Samuel H. Cheney, and two sisters, Mrs. Paul Perkins, and Mrs. Francis M. Hughes, besides several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mrs. Hughes was a woman well known in town. She was a member of St Marks' Episcopal Church and always prominent in church affairs. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, at her late home. Rev. Howard F. Hill of Concord, at one time pastor of this Episcopal church and a great friend of Mrs. Hughes preached a very able sermon. The floral pieces were very beautiful. The bearers were Frank G. Cummings, Curtis C. Baker, Dr. J.M. Cheney and Thomas F. Cox, E.G. Gammons, director. The Union Leader, January, 1905. Note: The spelling "Barnett" and "Barnet" are both used. To date, the correct spelling is arguable. Whether she lived on Mechanic street or Main street is up in the air. I expect Main street is correct. The age of 70 years 10 months and 32 days is amusing. That month has 32 days?? The birth date of March 8, 1824 is wrong. She was born February 22, 1834. The daughter's name is Mrs. J.M. Cheney, (Lucy Ashland Hughes). The brother is Samuel H. Baker. Evidently the typesetter transposed the two last names. B.L.H.
