Esther Jane Middleton married Herbert E. Johnson on June 8, 1910, in Ottumwa, Iowa. ---------------------- Obituary From “Ottumwa Courier,” November 17, 1973: Mrs. Herbert Johnson Mrs. Esther J. Johnson, 86, formerly of 401 S. Milner St., died at 2:10 a.m. today at Ottumwa Hospital. She was born Jan. 13, 1887, in England, the daughter of William and Martha Adams Middleton. She came to the United States as a child and lived in Ottumwa for 70 years. She was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church and married Herbert E. Johnson June 8, 1910. He died in 1964. Survivors include two sons, Robert M. of Justice, W. Va., and Arthur M. of Downers Grove, Ill.; one daughter, Mrs. Martha Middlesworth of rural Ottumwa; 14 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Phoebe Mitchell of Ottumwa. She was preceded in death by two sons, three brothers and two sisters. The funeral will be Monday, 3 p.m., at Plymouth Congregational Church with the Rev. Donald Ripley of Bethany Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery. The casket will remain at Johnson Funeral Chapel until noon Monday when it will be taken to the church.
