Melvin Johnson, 23, was injured AT Penny Fire. Melvin "Curly" Johnson, 23 years old Ottumwa firefighter, died at the Ottumwa hospital Thursday at 4:15 p.m.from the effects of lockjaw. The youthful fireman suffered a wound in his foot from a nail as he aided in battling the Penny blaze. Although he had worked constiinously since, it was from this wound that lockjaw developed. He had been nursing this wound, which, on the surface, did not appear to be serious. LEFT POST THURSDAY. Young Johnson was relieved from his morning shift Thursday at 7 o'clock. He entered in the hospital at 11:00 a.m. without aid. The son of Herbert E. and Easter Johnson, Melvin was born in Ottumwa on June 14, 1915. He lived with his parents at 720 Glenwood ave. He had lived in Ottumwa through out his life, was graduated from the class of 1933. He was formerly a member of the Dr Molay organization, at the time of his death was a member of Eagles lodge#114, the Plymouth Congergational Church, International Firefighters association, Iowa Association of Firefighters and Ottumwa Firemen's association. SERVICES SATURDAY: Surviving are his parents; a sister; Martha Johnson, at home; and three brothers: Edward; Arthur M. ; Robert M. Johnson of Ottumwa; and his grandmother: Mrs. Sarah Johnson of Ottumwa. Short services Wil be held in the home, Saturday at 3:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. in the Plymouth Congressional Church, conducted by the Rev. A. J. Spacht; pastor. Burial will be in the Shaul cemetery. Paulbearers will be followed by the Ottumwa firefighters: George A. Krafka; Henry Cutworth; Edward Anderson; Bernard Harden; Clarence A. Oswalt and Joe E. Burke.
