Description	:	Esther Lee, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Lee, was born Feb. 23, 1866, at La Moille, Ill. She came to Iowa with her parents in 1867 in a covered wagon train from La Moille. Esther was married Oct. 30, 1689, to Clarence F. Smith. To this union one child was born, Maudwaye. Mr. Smith preceded her in death July 20, 1950, and on June 19, 1951, their daughter, Mrs. Maudwaye Conklin, passed away. Mrs. Smith is survived by one grandson, Smith Conklin, his wife Rosemary, and two great-grandchildren, Shelly and Kurt Conklin, of Brevard, N.... Esther was married Oct. 30, 1689, to Clarence F. Smith. To this union one child was born, Maudwaye. Mr. Smith preceded her in death July 20, 1950, and on June 19, 1951, their daughter, Mrs. Maudwaye Conklin, passed away. Mrs. Smith is survived by one grandson, Smith Conklin, his wife Rosemary, and two great-grandchildren, Shelly and Kurt Conklin, of Brevard, N. C. Seven nieces also survive. Mrs. Smith sponsored the mother-daughter project at Graceland college, and her home was always open to Graceland students, to whom she was known as "Mother Smith." She was active in the Patroness Society as long as she was able to participate. Mrs. Smith passed away June 9, 1954. The "Mother Emeritus" title was given to her by President Briggs of Graceland in June of 1944 when Mother Smith terminated 16 years as director of the mother-daughter organization. She received at that time from the college the gold seal for meritorious service over that period. Furnishings in the lounge of Patroness hall, the girls' now dormitory on campus, have been designated as a memorial to the service of Mother Smith. A plaque to her memory will be placed in that room.
