Read More	YAKIMA - Esther Leone Ehlers, our adoring mother, went peacefully to be with her Lord on October 19, 2009 in the loving arms of her children. She was born April 27, 1925 in Wessington Springs, South Dakota. Esther was the older of two daughters born to Charles Abraham and Esther Irene Dufoe Abraham. After graduating from high school in 1943, she attended the American Institute of Business and then worked as a bookkeeper for a grain brokerage company in Des Moines, Iowa. In the spring of 1945 during World War II, the Army sent out a desperate plea for medical technicians and Esther wanted to join. She had to wait until her 20th birthday and since she didn't meet the weight requirement, she ate tons of bananas. She enlisted on her birthday April 27, 1945. She took basic training at Ft. Des Moines and was proud of "making it". She transferred to Wakeman Hospital Center at Camp Atterbury, Indiana where she received her Medical Surgical Technician certificate. However, she had also come to realize that she didn't like giving shots and was relieved when they saw her business background and put her to work in the office instead of on the wards. It was here that Mom met her future husband, and the love of her life, Richard (Dick) Ehlers. He was chief clerk of medical records at her office. Esther and Dick married August 3, 1946 in the base chapel. At that time, when you got married you had to leave the military, so she was honorably discharged. Dick began a long and successful career in the United States Air Force and Esther devoted her life to caring for him, their three children and many different homes. She rejoiced in their 62 wonderful years together and enjoyed the excitement of living in places like Japan and Alaska where she loved to camp, pan for gold and watch Dick fish. After leaving Alaska, they settled on a small acreage in East Selah where her green thumb produced abundant flowers and vegetables. They later moved to their present home in Yakima. She was devastated with the loss of her beloved husband last year and her children were so proud of her for carrying on alone. She loved animals, especially cats, and had several and also her small dog that helped keep her company. Esther was a devoted Christian and served on the Women's Executive Board of First Presbyterian Church. She cherished her church circle, which she led for many years. She had a zest for life and a manner of expressing her joy in the simplest of things and the beauty in nature that those that knew her will truly miss. Her husband and family meant everything to her and she was so proud of them and loved each dearly. She treasured listening to them and in what they were doing. She never missed a birthday and her favorite holiday was Christmas, which she planned for months searching for the perfect gift for everyone. She was a wonderful cook and loved fixing family meals and making candies and cookies for the family for Christmas. She will be remembered for her lifelong devotion to her family. Rest in peace our sweet and precious mother. Esther is survived by her three children & their spouses, Rick and Debbie Ehlers of Yakima, Randy & Sally Ehlers of San Diego, Debbie & Ralph Nielsen of West Richland; her grandchildren and spouses, Jason & Maria Stidham and Danny & Cassie Stidham of Kennewick, Matthew Stidham, Chris Nielsen, and Gina Nielsen of West Richland, Jenny and Christian Romple, Jonathan and David Ehlers of Yakima; great grandchildren, Kayla and Landon Stidham of Kennewick, Elijah, Abigail, Trinity and Hezekiah Stidham of Finley. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister, half-sister and step sister. The family wishes to thank her wonderful neighbors who watched over her this past year and for her church family that meant so much to her. A very special thank you to Lori Thomas who adopted Grandma and took her on all those special outings. The kindness of the fifth floor staff at Memorial Hospital will also not be forgotten. A viewing will be held for friends and family at Keith & Keith Funeral Home from 3-8 pm Tuesday, October 27, 2009. The funeral service will be held the following day, Wednesday, October 28, at First Presbyterian Church at 11:00 am, followed by a luncheon and graveside service.
