Mavis faced her illness with grace and fortitude. She loved life and was grateful for the last weeks and days she was able to spend with family members and numerous caring friends. She was born in Wessington Springs, SD on November 4, 1926. The younger of two daughters of Charles Abraham and Esther Irene Dufoe Abraham, she graduated from Wessington Springs High School in 1944 and afterward lived and worked briefly in Sioux Falls, SD; Des Moines, IA; and Chanute Airforce Base, IL. She later moved to Rapid City, SD and attended Greene's School of Beauty Culture. After graduating in December of 1947, she worked at beauty salons in Lemmon, SD and Redfield, SD. She married George Bacon on June 11, 1950, they lived in Redfield the remainder of their lives. They had three children: Sandra (Dennis) Gaspar, Spearfish, SD; Charles (Connie) Bacon, Webster, SD and Kathleen (Paul) Breeding, Las Vegas, NV. She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Redfield for 54 years. As an active member of the church family, she especially enjoyed attending circle meetings and serving on the Calling and Evangelism Committee. Residents of local nursing homes remember Mavis as a regular visitor who spent hours chatting with them, lifting their spirits with her twinkling eyes and cheerful demeanor. She was grateful for the opportunity to brighten someone's day and making a difference in their lives. Mavis loved spending holidays, especially Christmas, with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Annually, she created hand-made Christmas ornaments, numerous kinds of candy and bars, and went "all-out" with gifts and decorations. She never missed a birthday. Despite her advancing years, she remained adventurous and inquisitive. She traveled extensively, became a skilled computer and internet user, even established a page on Facebook shortly before her death. She took her first motorcycle ride at the age of 80. Mavis is survived by her sister, Esther Ehlers of Yakima, WA; her children; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one half sister and one step-sister.
