Description	:	Esther Louise Nicola, was born to Arthur and Jeanette (Haiker) Nicola in Harris, Iowa April 8, 1933. She graduated from Clear Lake High School in South Dakota in 1950. She married Duane Hock, her high school sweetheart, in 1951, when he joined the U.S. Air Force. She was the ultimate military wife, weathering more than 30 address changes in their 20 years in the Air Force. Their daughter, Arla, was born 1952 at Travis Air Force Base in California, then their son, Randal Duane, was born 1955 in Sioux Falls. She graduated from Clear Lake High School in South Dakota in 1950. She married Duane Hock, her high school sweetheart, in 1951, when he joined the U.S. Air Force. She was the ultimate military wife, weathering more than 30 address changes in their 20 years in the Air Force. Their daughter, Arla, was born 1952 at Travis Air Force Base in California, then their son, Randal Duane, was born 1955 in Sioux Falls. Mom’s ability to form deep, lasting attachments left friends crying every time the family moved around the Midwest, Texas, Key West, Anchorage, and Des Moines. Duane and Esther parted ways in 1983. A year later she hitched along with Arla and family to North Bend. She worked the Bureau of Land Management in Eugene, retired in 1997, and moved back to North Bend where she again developed sweet friendship connections with her church, family, and volunteered with South Coast Hospice. Esther loved God and knew who to thank for all her blessings— every sunset, flower, and relationship. Esther blessed the lives of those who crossed her path. Her warm expressiveness, honest compassion, and unbridled enthusiasm for life are attempts to describe her fun personality and contagious, overcoming attitude. She found humor and shared it everyday. She pursued kindness, happiness, and awe. She showed interest, making everyone feel loved, accepted, and welcomed. During her last eight years she enjoyed a special relationship with her beloved, Charlie Gross, who treated her with the love and respect she deserved as they spent time traveling, hiking, picking mushrooms, fishing, clam digging, entertaining friends and family, and attending Bunker Hill Assembly of God church and fish hatchery functions. Her family admired her non-judgmental acceptance and her pure, simple walk with Jesus. She had a lovely way of creating rainbows in people’s clouds, sunshine in the storms. Any good news was met with “Happy Day!” “If you did know her, you are extremely blessed; if you didn’t know her, I’m sorry for your loss.” She lived her life to the max even with painful debilitating arthritis, always keeping a positive attitude. We smile through our tears for having known and loved Mom, Gramma, friend. She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters of South Dakota. She is survived by sister, Fran Stoltenburg of Clear Lake, S.D.; daughter, Arla Ford, husband, Craig of North Bend with children, Ryan and wife, Jessica and granddaughters of Florida, Darren and wife, Bree and grandson, Easton and Ava on the way of North Bend, and Ruthie Sacket and husband, Jeremy of Roseburg; son, Randy Hock and wife, Tracy, with children, Cary and wife, Amy and Lindy and husband, Noah Johnson with grandchildren, Zane and Paige, all of Iowa, and sweetheart, Charlie, and tons of friends. Esther passed into the presence of her Lord Jesus, Sept. 29, 2016. We honor her request for no service. Memorials may be sent to South Coast Hospice, 1620 Thompson Road, Coos Bay, OR 97420. Cremation rites have been held at Ocean View Memory Gardens Crematory in Coos Bay under the direction of Coos Bay Chapel, 541-267-3131. -Coos Bay Chapel
