Vander Schaaf Mrs. Esther Vander Schaaf, age 80; of Alton, passed away Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at the Orange City Municipal Hospital Long Term Care Facility. Interment followed at Nassau Township Cemetery, near Alton under the direction of the Oolman Funeral Home of Orange City. Esther Lydia was born. August 11, 1920, in Alton, the daughter of John C. and Martha Etta (Stillwell) Keizer. She was raised at Alton, where she graduated from the Alton High School in 1938. She then attended Northwestern College in Orange City. She was a secretary for Charles B. Hoeven in Alton and later was an assistant clerk at the Sioux County Selective Service office in Orange City. On May 10, 1943, she married Robert Samuel Vander Schaaf in Alton. After Bob's discharge from the United States Navy, Esther helped her husband operate the Floyd Hatchery in Alton for twelve years. In 1958, they moved to Holland, Michigan where she worked as a saleslady while Bob attended Western Theological Seminary from 1958 to 1961. After his ordination, she helped her husband, as he pastored the Immanuel Reformed Church in Belmond, Iowa, from 1961 to 1970 and the Trinity Reformed Church of Fulton, Illinois, from 1970 to 1985. They then retired to Alton. Over the years, Esther was a Sunday School teacher and a Bible School teacher, and she was involved in small group ministries at various churches. She was currently a member of the Alton Reformed Church, where she belonged to the Mary Circle. Esther enjoyed reading, gardening, dining out, and corresponding with the many friends she had made through the years. She also took great delight in her family. Survivors include her husband, Pastor Bob Vander Schaaf, Sr.; her daughter and her husband, Rachel and Richard Aalbers, of Mt. Vemon, Iowa; her son Pastor Bob Vander Schaaf, Jr., of Volga, South Dakota; six grandchildren, Daniel Aalbers, and his wife, Shelly, of Hampton, Iowa; Ben Aalbers, of Oviedo, Florida; Abigail Aalbers, of Mt. Vernon; Aaron Vander Schaaf, of Lubbock, Texas; Adam Vander Schaaf, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Amber Vander Schaaf, of Volga; a great-grandson, Max Garrison Aalbers, of Hampton; and one brother and his wife, Gerald and Marie Keizer, of Alton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Bonnie Vander Schaaf; her step-father, Theodore Hansma; a brother and his wife, Edward Bentley and Sena Keizer; and an infant sister, Evelyn.
